The government has been trampling on the Constitution for decades. As much as I like Lincoln, it was also the end of the Civil War that began the ushering in of big government. It's scary to know that there are people in Washington who feel the states only exist to serve the whims of the federal government when our system of government wasn't set up to operate in that way.
Salmon Chase said something along the lines of states right's being a dead issue in America after the Civil War. The issue of state's rights being fought about during the Civil War was over slavery. The 10th Amendment is supposed to lay out what the role of the federal government is. Everything else is supposed to be left up to the states.
