Kitten urinating behavior

Thread Starter
My previous cat of almost 20 years recently passed away, and I would like to get a new kitten at some point. The problem is that the old cat had urination issues in his final years and had some accidents on my carpets which I have done my best to clean up (although in some places I've never been able to completely get rid of the smell). If I get a new kitten, will he just assume that it's OK to urinate wherever he gets a scent of the old cat's urine? I can't afford a new carpet right now, but I really miss having the company of a kitty. Any suggestions? Will a professional carpet cleaning help?

A professional cleaning may help but more than that, you need an enzyme cleaner that will remove the urine from the carpet.

We use a vet one at the shelter so no idea on which ones available are best but perhaps someone can recommend one, or the topic has come up a few times if you search the forums. I know Natures Miracle is one (available at Petsmart)

If you get a blacklight it will show you exactly where the urine is and you can attack those spots directly. Even if you get the whole carpet cleaned professionally it still doesn't mean that the urine will be out of the carpet completely. You need a special enzyme cleaner for that. Good luck and congratualations!
