Just so you know, you're probably driving people nuts with your text speak
Predictive text makes the messages too long, and I don't think anyone minds since we all type in the same abbreviations.

I even type out text messages fully. Well, I'm getting a little sloppy lately, but I can't stand it really. Yes, I've been know to use 2 or 3 texts for one message, but at least it's readable.

I abbreviate words like though=tho, through=thru, although=altho and I rarely use punctuation I'll=Ill, I'm=Im, don't=dont, But I usually spell the whole word out

oh, that's bad! I'm so very sorry for you.

I think that's how the education system is now teaching our kids how to write and spell - very sad.

When I was a kid, I read so many books, and spelling and grammar was drummed into me - it was such a big part of education at home and school. It seems less emphasis is put on reading these days, and the way they do basic maths now is so weird. And then you hear these occasional pushes from teachers and lecturers saying that you should be able to spell words any way you want as long as the meaning gets across - what??

But then, I'm the sort of person who writes emails to the news station when they misspell words on the news - that's somewhere that has no excuse for spelling errors or typos!

I don't text very often, but when I do I try to shorten it as much as possible but still sounding "normal". I have unlimited space when texting my husband (same acct), but everyone else I only get 160 spaces and that runs out WAY sooner than you'd think it would. I never use puntuation and abbreviate certain things like 2 for to, tho, altho, etc like a pp said. A lot of times I have to go back and shorten things further to get it all to fit in one text. Most words I try to spell out though.

I wouldn't care as long I understood what the person was texting to me. I am getting to the age where I hear of people I've known for many years passing away, so I cherish my friends no matter how they communicate with me.

We used to have these types show up on our forums at CompuServe every so often. It's extremely hard to read, and impossible for anyone with vision problems using a reader to read them, so we usually remonstrated with them.

Same with all caps, by the way.

That may have been the same guy who pointed out that texting from one cell phone to another is like driving from New York to California, towing your private Learjet behind your car.

I used to do that, but with my phone now I have to press a button to get into the numbers and then another button to get out and its just easier to type to instead of 2.

Sometimes I type r for are or u for you but thats as far as I go, aside from the ocassional lol.

If I can't say it in less than 160 characters, then a phone call is easier.

I'm guilty too. I enjoy text talking - and I can spell just fine. My Nana & I always shorten words to text message each other. I'll never forget the funniest one I got from her "Pwm take P Kit" that meant that she sold a Persian kitten to a police lady.
I've since told her that the company charges per message not per character.

I hate text speak when it spills over into facebook etc.

I have a question, and this might send the thread into IMO realms, but this is a real question I have, how far off is this from ASL?
I have been studying ASL (American Sign Language) and things get shortned, some verbs not signed.
Before I offend every deaf person here, I just see similarities in the language of text to ASL.
Actually there are no similarities. I am fluent in ASL and NZSL. Verbs etc are not signed because they are conveyed in expressions and one sign can mean 2-3 words and if you are fluent in ASL you will pick up on this. Talk to the tutor or an interpreter and ask them about this. Deaf people have many shared expressions that can mean something.

Thank you for answering me back. I was afraid to ask for fear of offending people. I am just baby steps into learning ALS, so much I never knew! Facial expresions, we take for granted. (hearing)
I am still on finger spelling, and facial epressions. so long a road to learn.
I dont know what NZSL is.

I have a full QWERTY keyboard and I will still abbreviate some stuff. Just because it makes it easier and I can fit the entire message in. I just got so used to limiting the amount of messages I sent to a few of my friends who used to only have 200 messages so I would try to make it so I would only have to send one text and still get everything in it.
But now most everyone I know has unlimited but I will usually abbreviate: You-U Your-ur to-2 the normal ones like that along with OMG TTFN LOL LMAO
OMGWTFBBQ (dont ask!) and a few others like that.

I never got into texting either, e-mailing is good enough for me or an actual phone call is good too, lol.
