I got a text message from a friend just now, and it's a typical text message of hers, and it drives me NUTS (this is exactly as it was written):

"Actuly im going 2 drop it off on my way hme frm twn 2mrw. i wil be thre at arnd 11am,if u arnt hme il find a gd hiding place 4 it"

I know I'm anal about spelling, but this is ridiculous, reading these messages really irks me!

I'm so glad we haven't gotten into text messaging, as I get the impression that that is only a slilght exaggeration from the norm, and I too would go straight around the bend!!! I know I could not write that way.

I hate text speak, hate it with a passion, but have to do so when talking to some friends. I only have 140 characters to convey a message and that runs out very fast. I try to make it as coherent as possible given the constrictions.

I agree! I text exactly as I would speak. I can't stand the short hand and things spelled like they sound. It drives me NUTS!

I was watching a comedian the other day talking about texting. Lamenting the same thing, and how goofy it all gets. He wondered if there was just some way to make it easier, if only there was some device that could transport our voice to the person to make things easier.

When are they ever going to get around to such a thing?

I don't read it as she means it, I find I read it in a stilted fashion just as it's written, to annoy myself even more or something...

oh this text is way over the top....I never text like that and some of my friends go overboard with the text talk too but I've never received a text this encrypted!!
I think now that phones have better keyboards this text talk will wind down...hopefully ...

Its "shorthand" writing - I can read it. But my concern is more if the person really knows how to really type it properly.

The scary thought is that kids in school won't know how to correctly spell any more - its getting worse and worse - especially with pc's and the short cut words. I use them from time to time but I know how to type them correctly if needed.

To translate:

Actuly im going 2 drop it off on my way hme frm twn 2mrw. i wil be thre at arnd 11am,if u arnt hme il find a gd hiding place 4 it"

"Actually I'm going to drop it off on my way home from town tomorrow. I will be there at around 11am, if you aren't home, I'll find a good hiding place for it"

Actually there IS a translator - its called "TALKING IN PERSON ON THE PHONE AND TELLING THE MESSAGE BY VOICE INSTEAD OF TYPING IT OUT".

Some companies will put a limit into how many characters you can send in one message. Therefore people will try to abbreviate every word possible so they can send one message instead of three. I must admit I use abbreviations like "2" for "to".

I can read it, and it's not shorthand, it's just laziness. It could have been said properly and more effectively in less characters.

The same comedian also mentioned we all walk around now looking like crack addicted praying Mantasis.(Manti?)
I have a question, and this might send the thread into IMO realms, but this is a real question I have, how far off is this from ASL?
I have been studying ASL (American Sign Language) and things get shortned, some verbs not signed.
Before I offend every deaf person here, I just see similarities in the language of text to ASL.

That message is about 130 characters long, most standard texts can only be 160. Had she used proper spelling and grammer the text would have been at least 2 if not 3 texts long.

That being said... I prefer more texts over text speak, it drives me effing crazy too.

She could have said:

"I'll drop it off tomorrow about 11am, and hide it in the bush if you're not home"

To me the whole point of an SMS is that I don't have to type it all out like I would an email.
Mum tends to make up her own abbreviations that have me stumped sometimes though

But with predictive text, it's so easy and it doesn't take any extra time.

Just so you know, you're probably driving people nuts with your text speak

Trapped in the catroom! ;o)
If I text to the same cell provider (verizon to verizon) I can send as many pages as I want to a person but if its a diff provider I only get 170 characters...I dont abbreviate anything except OMG LOL and LMAO! I cant stand text language stuff its annoying Id rather just spell it all out and type the way I talk
