Is this ringworm?

Hi,

My calico kitten has developed a few small round gray discolorations on a white area of her ear. Her other ear has a scabby area, and our vet took a culture for ringworm.

At first I thought these 1/4-inch round spots were just dust. But they don't wash off, so I'm treating them with Tresaderm we're using on her other ear and one toe. I mentioned them to our vet on the phone today and that's what she suggested.

The spots are not scabby or raised, or anything unusual except small, roundish and light gray. Does anyone know if this is another manifestation of ringworm, or something else?

Many thanks!

Simple way to find out if it's ringworm:

Take a Wood's Lamp [aka black light] and shine it over the suspected area. Fungi [which is what ringworm is] glows in black light. Make sure you're in a dark room with barely any light when you shine the black light over her ear.

I'd still be precautious and phone your vet to ask advice.

Also, sometimes at certain stages and species ring worm won't glow. [about 30% of the time] so it's not all the way full-proof. If the Tresaderm doesn't help at all, I would make an appointment to take her into the vet.

Also, many pets who've gotten ringworm once may get it again...

Thanks, I hope someone has seen this before.

The kitten was at the vet on Saturday and I stupidly forgot to point these spots out, although the vet noticed the little scab on her other ear, which didn't glow during the Woods light test. Nothing else was glowing on the cat, either. She did a culture, which will take weeks to tell us anything.

They are just gray, round discolorations, with no scabs or hair loss. I'm going over to the vet today, without the kitten, but I'll see if they have any thoughts. I can't afford all these appointments!

I understand what you mean. There is no definite way anyone on here can truly tell you. Although, from how you describe them it does sound like it. Plus, it's likely due to her already having it once.

It's good that you are doing the best you can. Perhaps take a photo of her ear and show it to the vet when you go there to talk with them. Take a couple at different angles and a photo of the normal ear so they can compare.
