My girl cat peed on her cat bed... cat nip?

right after I put cat nip on it, she peed right in front on me!!! GRRR!

Was it the cap nip?? Was she saying to the other cats, this is MY cat nip on MY bed?

I did have a pee issue in the house and seriously, I thought it was Milo the alpha kittie but now after seeing Spoo do that in front of me no less, could it be her that has been doing it all along?

The peeing issue has stopped after - I've been using No Mark and Calming Spray from PetSmart that works well.

What do you think??

I guessing that you've already ruled out any urinary health issues ?

Hm...this seems odd.

Perhaps she is the one peeing in the house. Target both her and Milo [random interjection: That's my kitty's name too! ^_^] for pee training.

Also, has she been spayed? Sometimes frequent urination is a sign of heat. Catnip mimics some sort of pheremone that mimics a hormone found in tomcat urine, so perhaps this is causing a hormonal reaction to her.

And as Gloria said: rule out any health issues first. UTIs, bladder stones, etc...Many of these have symptoms which include frequent urination outside of litterbox.

HI!!

They are all healthy UTI wise. Spookahontas is fixed since a baby. She is 4 now. I bought in a new cat 6 months ago. The new cat chases her under the stairs ALOT. Spoo has a few claw marks on her nose. She is always running from one of the boys.

I found it quite odd that right in front of me she did this. Should I have done something when she did that? I don't know if I should have repremanded her? All I did was throw the bed with bleach in the washer. That was it. She is so sensative to begin with if I yelled at her she would probably never come out from under the stairs!

Fiddledee - even though she is fixed could she have peed for territorial purposes with the cat nip sending off a hormonal situation to her?

How many litter boxes do you have? When you said the new cat chases her it made me wonder if he's guarding the box. If so, she's looking for some other place to urinate. Many cats will go someplace where they can get down inside of something like their litter box. A cat bed could fit the bill.

Good thinking Howtoholdacat! At the time she peed all four of the cats were in the kitchen with me because I was giving cat nip of course Rangie Boy the new cat WAS by the litter box at that time he was just standing there. I wonder now if that was why she went there!

I have 2 litter boxes that are HUGE! They are those $25.00 monster boxes from PetSmart, I have one hidden out in the kitchen and one in a back bedroom.

I bet that if Spookahontas had to go that she was too afraid to run to the one in the back room because she would have had to pass Rangie Boy either way! Very good point and since it was a first - odd occurence I will let this one slide. Maybe I should put one more box by the stairs for her? Literally she will spend 1/2 the day under the stairs! I have even put a nice heavy fleece blanket under there for her comfort!

She is one of the first to be in my house since a baby. 2 others came in after her.. she has never done anything like this before!

I had that problem but it took me a long time to figure it out. Something about your post just reminded me of my own house. Once I put another box in a strategic location the problem was solved. I hope it's as simple for you!

My 15-year old female cat also urinated next to and on the spot where I give her catnip. I sprinkle catnip on the open lid of her double-wide cardboard scratcher and then she rolls around in it. I've been doing this for years with no improper urination ever for any reason. However within the past month, she has urinated twice--once next to the scratcher and just the other day, right on the lid of the scratcher. After the first incident, thinking she might have a bladder infection, I took her to the vet and gave her a cycle of antibiotics because her white blood cells were a little low.

After the second incident though and finding online info that catnip may encourage urination, I now think catnip is the culprit!

It seems odd though that it started happening now after years of exposure to catnip. Perhaps it is age-related.

my best friend's cat loses control of his bladder sometimes when he has catnip - and only then. he gets all drugged up and relaxed and if he is too relaxed, there he goes!

I feel relieved to here your posts on the cat nip!!! I have not given her any since the incident and also took her to the vet (clear bill of health) ... I got worried

New Rule of Thumb: No more cap nip on soft white kitty bed!
