After all this stuff about fleas was posted I knocked and knocked on wood we wouldnt get them. I found one single lonely flea on Franklin yesterday so Im going to the vet to get drops for everyone and DE hopefully I can find it at CT and new vacumn bags to sweep everything more detergent to wash everything and hopefully knocking on more wood again we nip this right away before it becomes an infestation! Anyone got anymore advice Im taking a bit of everything from all the other flea threads and getting everything I can afford right now! Dawn soap, DE (if I can find it), flea collars, drops from the Vet (frontline), you name it Im going to try and buy it!!!

Ughhh I hate winter and bugs!

Get an OTC flea collar and put it in the vacuum bag.

The Advantage, Frontline, etc. work great.

Do NOT put a flea collar on your kitty. The only good use for a flea collar is what the above poster recommended - cut it up and put it in your vacuum bag.

Also, try treating the areas where they lounge/sleep the most with some sort of flea spray, kind of like what Frontline makes. The spray is normally expensive, but it lasts a LONG TIME. Often, just treating the cat doesn't work. Treat the areas they are in too, because flea eggs/dirt may be there. Even just wash their beds or your sheets if they sleep with you.

And Frontline drops would be a good choice, since you have a dog and both species can use it. Don't get Advantix for your dog, because the cats may lick it off.

Also, Capstars are fairly cheap [about $3 a pill]. You give it to your pet and all the live adult fleas living on them are killed, plus it keeps any new fleas from jumping on for a 24 hour period. After the 24 hours, you can put preventative drops like Frontline on them.

You don't have to do all of these, just letting you know that you have many options. And at least you've only seen a few fleas so far. I know that where there's one there's more, but at least you don't have a house infestation issue that's unbearable and difficult to handle. At least your noticed it and are taking quick action to stop it.

We havent even seen a few it was one flea on the dog and he was bathed right away at 1030 last night and then this morning we woke up early to go to the store and hunt up flea stuff. So far everything is getting washed, the sofa was taken apart and swept off and the covers washed. All the dog bedding is being washed now, Hercules towels from the bay window were taken off and washed, even our bedding and any and everything cloth that was laying out in the open is getting washed. I removed every piece of furniture out of the living room and vacumned everything with flea sprinkle stuff (locked the cats in there room to do it and put Franklin outside) I did the bedroom too and moved the bed so I could get under that and swept in our closet because that has carpeting and Fatman sleeps in there. We also got fly stripes because the windows that havent been replaced arent the best so we figured if air can get in a flea can. We also sprayed the Home Defense Max outside every doorway and window. Im going to do the inside at some point tomorrow. Im also going to repeat this process of vacumning weekly to make sure we got all flea eggs that could be around too. So hopefully this one flea that startled us last night was the one and only we have in here and it was just brought in when Franklin went out potty. Ive checked everyone with a flea comb and havent found any but still Id rather catch it now than when its technically an infestation. But this couldnt have happened at a worse time. My brother and his girlfriend are in the hospital having their baby..Im going to be an Auntie!!! So now I have to wait to go to the hospital to see them tomorrow!!!

I just wanted to add...To anyone who is having flea problems its good to keep cleaning everything but make sure you get EVERY piece of furniture and under everything you can. BF and I were talking about how if we wouldnt move the couch or bed or dressers and stuff like that it would be almost pointless because the fleas could be under the bed dresser couch etc...Even the closet! So I just wanted to add no matter how much of a PITA it is to move everything do it because otherwise it could be a ridiculous cycle that never ends! Ughhh I hate bugs!! lol..

Kudos to you for taking care of business! Intense cleaning is what works. Seems like your fur babies are gonna be flea free! Glad that it wasn't as bad as it can get.

BF and I are both allergic to fleas. Say we got bit by one on our arm we get red splotches and hives the whole way up our arms. Its HORRIBLE so its something that we try and keep on top of at all times! Unfortunately we happened to find that one but so far nothing not a flea in sight at all for the past 2 days! *KNOCK ON A TREE* lol I know it would probably work better if we constantly used drops on them but neither of us like the drops because it makes the cats fur greasy for like 2 days and then to top it off they are rolling around on our bed and pillows and we dont want that stuff all over! So we will only use it for this month and next month just as a preventative and then possibly start it in May or June!

Please do not ever use over-the-counter flea products on your cat OR in your house.

Flea drops like Advantage and Revolution need to be given by weight of your cat so please don't just do it without speaking to a vet.

There are some very dangerous products out there that can harm/kill your pet and then there are knock-offs as well as some that are sold online that are watered down versions of the real thing.

Get your meds from a vet please.

We got Frontline for them. It murdered my poor wallet doing that but I didnt really have a choice...I spent all my money I made from Friday to Sunday getting all the cleaning stuff plus drops for them from the Vet. I could have gotten Frontline cheaper at CT but I just played it safe and went to my money hungry Vet (they jack up prices on EVERYTHING)

I like "Adams Flea spray" that I get from Walmart. I also ordered the "Revolution" treatments 6 pack from a site called www.vidalspet.com . It was the same exact package as what I got from the vet but only paid $58 for six applications. It dried very fast and is not greasy. It also takes care of alot of issues besides fleas. Worth a try.

I also recommend Revolution over Frontline or Advantage. Advantage gave my cat a very, very bad reaction and I thought I had killed him.

Revolution has worked the best on my dogs and cats.

I know that at my vet and the vet I've worked for, a large Frontline was able to be divided up according to each pet's weight, so I got a few uses out of one vial.

DO NOT do this without specifications or reccomendations from your vet. But next time you have to get Frontline, ask them if they know about dividing a large Frontline into specific amounts for each cat, since it would save money. Again, only do this under a vet's guidance.

UGH! Now I'm dealing with fleas too!!! I got a flea comb today just to help a bit. We put the flea drops on them and it seems to be working, but now it's time to tear apart the house and clean everything! Great idea about a flea collar in the vacuum!!!! I washed all the pet beds, blankets, etc..... This really sucks. I've never had a problem with fleas before and it seems like everyone I know around my area is dealing with them right now!

If you use DE make sure its food grade. (yes some people feed it as a wormer) Otherwise you are going to get the stuff they use in pools and such and its full of harmful chemicals. We use it for our chickens. we put a pan out and let them dust themselves with it. Keeps any critters that might think of living in their feathers away.
