I went out to the laundryroom at our apartment complex to do a load of laundry. There was a washer open but all four dryers had clothes in them. Two of them were completed, just needed to have the clothes removed. after half an hour, I went out to put my clothes in the dryer but the people had not taken their clothes out yet! I waited another 15 minutes and went out again. One dryer was empty (the one who was putting her clothes in the dryer as I was putting mine in the washer. Hers was the one still going when I first tried to dry my clothes) Well, I put my clothes in the dryer and went back about 45 minutes later. Some
had opened my dryer and didn't restart it! So needless to say, my clothes were still damp. I had to put another four quarters in to finish drying them. I just wish people would be more considerate and not monopolize the facilities that need to serve the whole complex. We only have four washers and dryers! That is why I prefer to go to the laundromat.

Stuff like this is why I'm glad I have my own home and appliances.

I'd suggest picking odd times to do your laundry, whenever possible. But I suspect everyone thinks of that, too. Another suggestion to recoup your losses on quarters - I bet someone has dropped some, take a peek around the machines and in the washers themselves.

I remember many years ago as a child my dad would wash his work clothes at the laundry mat - I'd look in all of the machines and found a $20 that way.

When we were kids my brothers made about that much by taking apart our old dryer to be recycled for for scrap metal. All the change that fell out of people's pockets over the yars and slipped behind the drum. Go figure.

Nuh uh...might give me away!
I had that happen often when I lived in the dorms on campus. So I started doing my laundry after midnight. Luckily for me, we had wireless access available in the laundry room, so I would just take my laptop down, and do homework, talk online, etc. Saved me many headaches. (And no, it didn't bother my roommate that I would come in so late...she was rarely there at that time anyway.)

In any place I've lived, the unspoken rule has been - if you do not empty your clothes from the washer/dryer on time and another arrives to use it, your clothes will be removed and put into a crinkly ball in the laundry room.

I think it is polite to wait 5 minutes...but I'm ruthless after that. (we have some neighbors who leave dont come back for DAYS literally. We also have only three washers for 50 units.)

but yes op, I feel ya. Inconsiderate behavior is annoying, esp. when you are trying to get stuff done.

I live in a big high-rise, and it's just the general rule here, as well, that if you aren't there when the clothes are dry and your dryer stops, someone waiting (and there's always someone waiting) will take them out so they can use the dryer. You're right....it's really inconsiderate to just leave dry clothes there when there are people waiting.

Have you thought of putting up a big sign? It can be polite: "Please remember that there are alot of people in this building, and someone may be waiting to use the washers and dryers. Please remove your clothes promptly when they're finished. Thank you!"

I feel your pain, that is a pet peeve of mine too. I live in a 104 unit apartment building and there is a laundry room on each of the 3 floors. I always set my kitchen timer for the wash and dry to avoid having anyone take my clothes out of the washer or dryer. There have been a few times where I've taken the dry clothes out of the dryer so I could wash my own. I don't like doing that but then again I can't wait around forever for that person to come get their dry clothes.

Re sign, how about one that asks people to leave their laundry baskets next to the machine they're using?

I always leave my basket on top of the washer and right in front of the dryer when I'm using them, so that if I ever get held up and can't get to my clothes right away and someone needs the machine, they can just take my clothes out.

Trapped in the catroom! ;o)
This makes me thankful that I have my own appliances because Im always doing laundry and leaving it in the dryer because either I get home to late to fold it and put it away or I am gone and forget that I even did laundry but its easier because I just turn the dryer back on throw in a couple more dryer sheets and refluff up my clothes!

People in my building are pretty good about taking their laundry out of the washers and dryers. There is about 50 units in this building and only 4 washers/dryers. I usually do my laundry around 10pm and there is rarely ever anyone else in there.
