Hey all. I just got my first pet kitten, always been a dog guy - but when a buddy found out he couldn't keep the little black runt with no tail, I had to take him in as I was considering a small (apartment) dog already. I was won over.

Found this place and wanted to join so I could keep an eye on it, make sure I'm doing everything right as I raise this little guy.

Welcome to TCS!

Please feel free to ask any questions, no matter how funny they may sound. Cats are very different from dogs, and we may be able to help you have a happier relationship.

Nothing like going to sleep with a purring kitten, though, is there?

Well, I actually only have one small question right now. That is, when I had dogs I grew up training them with choker collars (because of how strong and thick my dogs' necks were it was barely a tug back), but Socrates is pretty people-friendly already, so aside from setting basic rules I'm letting him do his thing until he wants to chill. But I wanted to keep a collar on him, so that I know where he is and he can't dash out, and in case he does get out and someone finds him.

I got a basic nylon snap-away, and while it's still loose enough that it shouldn't bother him more than having a bell would bother any other animal, it doesn't look like it cold possibly be comfortable; it's just pushing his hair up to make room for itself. I was wondering if a leather collar might be better for him in that regard, once he's grown up a bit?

Welcome to TheCatSite Jester,

You are going to make a great cat daddy.

I would like to help you with your collar question but first let me suggest that as your first line of defense, micro-chipping your kitty would be wise.
There are lots of threads in our Care and Grooming Forum about Collars and Micro-Chipping.
You can find them using that forum's search function.
Below are just 2 examples of threads, I found when I did a chip and collar search.
They will get you started.
Have fun...
I will see you around the site.
