No real need to know, just my curiosity is getting the better of me.

Sometimes, Squeaky drinks "normally," ie, head by dish, lapping it out. And sometimes, she sticks her paw in the dish, and then licks the water off.

It's not because the water is too low - she does this right after I fill it up and when it's further down in the dish.

Is there a reason?

My cat Toby does this too. I have no idea why, but it's cute to watch
It's probably just a habit or quirk. I once had a cat who stirred the water up with his paw or moved his bowl across the floor so there were waves in the water when he drank.

This is an instinctual behavior. Cats although domesticated and social are very connected to their wild ancestors. In the wild they would often dip their paw in a river or stream and drink the water from their paw. Another is when they dig around their food bowl, in the wild they would bury their left over food to hide it from scavengers so they could eat it later........
