It's not hyped! I am an RN and have seen what this flu can do to young, healthy adults and children!
Here is a true case:
I admitted a young woman of 20 years who was pregnant and had a slight cough, which I never did hear. Her chest was completely clear and she had no temperature. The reason she was admitted is because she was pregnant and happened to live in a remote area that had been hit hard by the H1N1 virus. So her admission was purely precautionary on the part of her gynecologist.
I admitted her around 10pm. At 2am they called a code blue on her and she was intubated and sent to the ICU where she remained on a ventilator for several weeks because she couldn't breathe on her own. She lost the baby.
Another case. A woman had a C-Section with a spinal epidural, and went into respiratory distress. There was nothing in her history that would indicate that she would have such a reaction and she was doing fine until she was in the recovery room when she started to go into respiratory distress. She too was intubated and sent to the ICU. After sending off H1N1 swabs it was discovered that she had the H1N1 flu. She never did recover and they took her off of life support after almost 2 months. She was 22 years old and had never had any major illnesses. She had been essentially healthy until she got the H1N1 flu!
So yes, I was blasais about this flu at one time, but not anymore because I've seen what it can do. Its not just another flu! It's virulent and more deadly than any other flu in our recent history. Not since the influenza outbreak in the early 1900's have we seen the devastation that a flu can cause.
Yes, people have died from "the flu" since the early 1900's. But what makes this flu worse than others is the population that it seems to attack the hardest. It's not just old, frail or sickly people dying: It's young, healthy and vibrant people who shouldn't be dying from "just the flu!"
