Dusty doesn't dig in the box. She just hops in, squats and leaves. The kitten Squeak digs to the bottom of the box and then throw litter all over the place to cover up her stuff.

Yesterday Dusty used the box as normal, peeing on top in the corner. When she was finished and left, Squeak hopped in and covered up Dusty's pee clump! We've seen her do this twice now!

Some think that the alpha cat in the household often doesn't cover up, as a sign of his/her status.

That makes sense. Of course Dusty did that before we got Squeak. I confess it is easier to scoop when it's on top. I just thought that was funny that Squeak decided to cover up for Dusty.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
A couple of our kitties are just spastic about it. Spooky will pee - then just wave her paw around in the air LIKE she's scooping litter over her pee - or move around litter where she's facing, not where she peed.
But when Shelly poops and just RUNS out of the litter box - Spooky will jump in and cover up for him. Neither one is the alpha, so who knows what goes on in the mind of a cat?
