WARNING: Full-out rant ahead.

So Milo's third set of kitten shots was due today. I recently adopted him from this local veterinary clinic which said it had "healthy kittens needing adoption." My boyfriend and I paid the adoption fee, and were told that when we brought him back we would not owe anything for his following kitten rotations due to adopting him from there. Even if we were told that we would have to pay for his vaccs, I wouldn't have minded.

Anyway, I called a week ago to make an appointment and was told "Just bring him in, we're a walk-in only clinic." I've heard of these, but they are only extremely small, or are emergency vet hospitals. This is a practice of medium size with two veterinarians. My suspicions were raised because I've never really seen something like this in the 6 years I've worked for a veterinarian.

I bring him in and was not told who the vet was going to be that will treat him. I get into the exam room and waited for a while. She finally came in, asked me the cat's name. She then picked him up and proceeded to leave the room. I protested, knowing that most cats are calmer when their owners are with them. She told me no, it will only take a few minutes. I then said that I really wanted to be with him, and I'm used to seeing things because I have worked for a vet previously. She then was even more adamant about me not coming back there. So, not wanting to get on her bad side, I sat down and waited. Thinking that this would be a simple vaccine checkup, I estimated it would take about 10 minutes. I was mistaken--I ended up being there for 45 minutes!

Meanwhile, I hear Milo's "I want Mommy or Daddy" meow that he rarely gives. Then, I hear a big cat yowl and scream. I dunno if it was him, because he's never made so much as a peep of aggressive noise toward us or anyone he meets.

She then brings him back into the room, dumps him on the table and tells me "he's due for his final round on the 26th." As she turns to walk out I stop her, asking if there were any problems. She then tells me that he has ear mites, explains to me not to clean his ears because she put in this "solution" for ear mites that works once. I've never heard of this, nor have I heard the instructions to NOT clean a cat's ears when they have mites. She then tells me that they treated him for worms, which he apparently had when I adopted him. I was never told this. She never told me what type of worms they were either. I've examined his poop before, so I know it's not tape or round worms. I tell her what I've been feeding him [Nutro Naturals Dry Kitten Indoor formula mixed with wet Wellness for Kittens]. She actually encouraged me to "wean him off the wet" because it doesn't add anything to his nutrition, and even though I feed him dental treats and some hard food he'll still get teeth problems. Ooooooh that made me mad, but I kept silent, even though I was itching to call bull@#$& on her.

I then asked her about neutering since both of his testicles were descended and he was 5lbs. She remembered as if it were an afterthought and told me that he was ready to be neutered. She then told me the cost:

$158!!!! Not including meds or pre-anesthetic blood work. Good lord, that's more expensive than I've ever seen!

Oh yeah, remember how I was told that I owe nothing for his sequential kitten shots? Psh, they went back on that promise real quick. Owed $100 for this visit.

Poor Milo. He was so stressed in this atmosphere. He practically leaped into my arms. Now he's laying on the bed by the window seal, recovering from this ordeal which was stressful for the both of us. I am changing vets ASAP. I might even just take him to the Vet School small animal clinic at my university. Anything would probably be more pleasant and cheaper than this place!

That sounds awful!

Sounds like the vet was very inconsiderate of your wishes and gets a big zero in client relations. And that's terrible that they charged you when they said they wouldn't. And 45 minutes for vaccinations? It would have taken her ten to draw up the vaccines, come in to the exam room and give them while talking to you. Jeesh

Did you sign an adoption agreement? Did it cover anything about not having to pay for his remaining vaccinations? Do you remember who told you that? I'd definitely fight that.

I agree. Time for a new vet!

I'm not mad that I had to pay, it's just that if I was prepared and told beforehand that I would owe, then I would be fine with it. Instead, I had to lump it all on my boyfriend's sum because I didn't have enough upfront to pay for it due to the trip I took last weekend. If I was notified, I would have saved up a little.

I thought it was really weird they would not let me be at the examination as well. Normally cats aren't as stressed if the owner is present.

Actually, they kept the adoption agreement now that I think about it...ARGH! I should have not been stupid and realized something was wrong at the beginning.

Also, the ear mites and worms he contracted while at the vet's office, so I think I should only have to pay for any take-home, follow-up medications.

I guess I'll just have to make the 4 hour drive to take him to the veterinarian I used to work for.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
There aren't any other vets near you? You're going to need one that you can reach in an emergency (knock wood).

That sounds like a terrible vet and an awful experience all the way around, I'm so sorry.

We adopt kitties out through our vet - but the people adopting them know they were feral rescues, and they all require de-worming, de-fleaing/tic-ing - (done before they go home, but at least the worming and vaccinations need follow-ups) - and often they have ear mites or whatever. No one ever promises a healthy kitty. That's terrible.

...and I've never been to a vet where they take the cat away for vaccinations. They do take them away to draw blood - but the exam is always with us there.

Wow, that sounds like a terrible vet practice! Poor Milo, I'm sure he was needing lots of loving from you afterwards. I personally wouldn't go near that place again, and I'm sure there are plenty of other decent places nearby.

Oh yes, there are plenty of vets in my area. I attend a vet school, so therefore there are a lot of residual graduates in the area. The vet I worked for 4 years part-time and 1 year full time gave me a 60% discount if I had a pet. Since I work for her on and off when she needs me and I'm not enrolled in classes I may still get that discount. A huge discount plus a really good vet that I know and am friends with sounds mighty attractive to me at the moment. But inconvenient. Luckily neutering falls right around Thanksgiving...

I'll shop around more to see. I think that there's enough competition in my area with the vet school that I'll find a vet with decent prices and above all, a good practice.

I expected to have a kitten without 100% health, but I would have loved to have been informed of what he had exactly when I adopted him.

And yes, Milo got many treats from me, and is still being currently loved and petted while I'm on the laptop.

I would *not* bring your baby back there again *ever*. Only God knows what was done to him and how it was done and why. It's easy for them to charge for a bunch of "tests" that they may or may not have performed. Were those tests necessary? How was the animal treated during those tests. We have every right to be with our cat when it's being examined. Myself, I now refuse to let my babies out of my sight when at the vet's. If they say "No". I say, "Sorry, I'm going somewhere else".

And as far as what she recommended you for your cat's nutrition, *please* don't listen to her! Let me rephrase, I'm very glad you're not going to listen to her!

Please don't go back there again, for your baby's sake! It's not worth it. They don't even sound like they care about cats. Next thing you know, she'll be recommending you get your baby declawed!

This is awful but sounds like the vet that I used to use. I had to wait until cuddles was 5 months before they would neuter him, and they also charged me 160 bucks, and I didn't even get the blood work ups or extra stuff they offered. Some clinics seem to be in it just for the money.

I'm so sorry to hear that, that all sounds horrible! I'd be switching ASAP as WELL as reminding them that I was told it would be of NO COST when I brought him back in! Horrible! Poor kitty

I would recommend you sit down and write a letter to them and calmly let them know about your horrible experience (and Milo's as well) with the visit, and their going back on their adoption promise. Let them know that they were very unprofessional and you would never recommend them to anyone unless and until they make changes. I wouldn't hesitate to play the vet tech card either and subtly hint at how many vets you know that would never treat a patient and client in this manner.

I would also ask for a copy of the adoption agreement you signed.

Good idea! I may do that once midterms are over. Also, I know she graduated from the vet school I'm currently about to attend [and the one my previous boss attended too] and she is representing the university poorly by having bad customer relations. They would not appreciate what she's doing.

And I'm definitely coming back when I return from visiting my parents Monday and obtaining a copy of that adoption agreement, which both my boyfriend and I signed. Grrr...I wish I read it more thoroughly.

I also question how they can charge you for things that you did not tell them to do, or give permission for them to do. You took him in for a booster shot only, not all the other testing and treatment that they did.

The next time you take Milo to a vet tell them you want to know exactly what they're going to do before they do it. If you think something is unnecessary you can refuse to have it.

When you get the copy of the adoption agreement, ask for a copy of all of Milo's medical records so you can take them to the new vet.

Wow, your visit sounds crazy! My vet is *very* accomidating, if I ask for something special such as going to the back with the cat - they would be like "no prob!" I like the letter idea, that's a great idea.

My vet is a 'Walk in only' vet.... Minus spay/neuter, you schedule those. It's far from a small clinic. 4 vets, a whole slew of techs (at least 7), and they have the most patients I have ever seen at one vet, the parking lot is always crammed full of cars when we go. When you go in, you never know which vet you will get, BUT you can ask for a particular vet if you want them. And they explain everything, such as treatments and tests that are needed, before they do them. I don't feel the need to have my cats in plain sight 100% of the time at my vets (I trust them) but they only take animals in the back who are deathly sick, getting tests, or xrays. Everything else is done in the room. I am super lucky, they happen to be the cheapest vet around here too!

The vet you went too... wow. Glad you are getting a diff vet, but I bet that was an easy option!

I agree with GoldyCat.
I'd definitely request an itemized list of procedures, owners are entitled to know the details of treatments & procedures.
A simple shot & exam should not cost that much and most importantly, they should not perform anything other than what you initially requested without your permission. Medical procedures for pets are not only expensive but also may risk pets' life if something goes wrong. If other procedures are deemed necessary for your kitty's health, that should be clearly discussed with you BEFOREHAND.

It is not only horrible & agonizing to imagine what the heck they'd do to our furry babies behind the door...but more than that, vets giving unnecessary fear & pain to animals should not be doing business(but unfortunately, there're so many who's doing business just for $$$$).

I've had a couple of vets like that before and had to switch from one vet to another until I found a really great one that specializes for Cats.
This vet was 20 min(vs. 2 to 5 min) away from my old home but the treatments & cares we got from them were worth all the travel.
I've relocated since then but my current vet is also a Cat specialist & indeed very nice.

I'm sure there's a good & caring vet in your area - reviews from other cat owners do help. Keep asking around.
Hope you'll find a trusting & caring vet for Milo

no wet food at all? I have a Vet friend who once told me, that a cat who has only dry food can encounter urinary tract problems & infections and that they should have some wet food too. your experience sounds awful, I'm so sorry for you and your baby.

I've worked half a decade for a veterinarian, and it seemed that they were less inclined to let me into the back with Milo when I told them that fact. Also, the worms and ear mites were already in him when I got him and I was neglected to be told that. Luckily they have not given him any trouble so far. Due to me not being informed about them, I haven't tried to prevent or clean anything since getting him.

She gave me this stuff for his ears to kill the mites and "treat the infection/inflammation." I haven't really heard of a combo like that. At the vet I worked for, we used a combo eardrop treatment and Mometomax for inflammation. I'm wondering if I should just go ahead and start cleaning his ears. The vet told me that I did not have to clean his ears after she administered this, and if I really wanted to I'd need to wait a week. Just to clean his ears, which is the best way to speed along ear mite treatment and prevent it. Any of you guys ever hear of this "miracle drug" for ear mites?

I wish I had been more confrontational, but the terrible treatment was so un-personal and unexpected that I hadn't really prepared to say anything in protest. Now I wish I had. I'm a very subdued person when it comes to personal confrontation, but for the right of my kitty, I need to stand up more since he can't say anything in his defense.

SO glad you know that this is NOT normal for a vet. A lot of people would not have realized that the way they treated you and your cat is wrong.

There are a couple of small practice vets (1 vet per practice) about 3 mins from my house, but one is very expensive, and the other only cares about $. For example, 2 people I know have taken their cats to this vet, both cats with leg/hip injuries, and this particular vet told both owners, that their cats would die within 2 weeks if they did not have this very very expensive procedure surgical performed. Both owners opted out of the surgery, because they couldn't see the cats dying over a leg injury. Well, both cats lived WELL past the 2 week mark, so it was quite obvious the vet was tryin to use the owners' love for their cats to make extra $. Because of this, I take my cats to the local Humane Society for their shots, andboth of my cats were speutered there as well. It costs like $60 for shots and a visit. It cost Mittens' previous owner $120 to spay her, and $86 for Monster to be neutered.

I think it is absolutely RIDICULOUS for a veterinarian to treat an animal and that animal's owner the way you've been treated.. It sounds like they just wanted you to go back, which is why they told you it would be free. They mut only care about $.. Which is wrong, vets are supposed to care about animals, and their health and well being.
