HAPPY Bill would allow Pet Care Deduction!

In Congress right now!!

Quote:
Pets could soon pay for themselves if a bill that allows owners to deduct the cost of caring for their animal’s passes.

If approved, the Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years (HAPPY) Act would amend the Internal Revenue Code to allow a tax deduction of up to $3,500 per year for pet care expenses, including veterinary care, according the House Resolution 3501.
Now that is a GOOD one!!

That'll be a huge economic stimulus bill for pet supply stores and manufacturers as well as veterinarians, and probably since people will be able to afford more pets it'll take some pressure off shelters. In summation, I approve of this idea

Seems like it will be great if it passes (and goodness I have plenty of pets!)....but I still want to do a little more detailed research first before I make a conclusion on it.

Please let us know your findings - I really don't see how this bill could ever hurt us pet owners...

Absolutely!!!

I did a rough estimate on what I spent on mine each year the other day. It came to $7,800, and that did not include any vet cost above and beyond annual check ups. In the past year, I've had 3 ER visits, a couple of dentals, a couple of minor illnesses, surgery on Eightball and surgery on Spike. I know I spend over $10,000 a year when its all said and done. This would be absolutely wonderful for people like myself!!

Edited:
There's a member who doesn't have 100 posts yet so can't respond to this thread that asked me to post this link on their behalf. It does give you a form letter already written on the topic to send to your representative. If you don't like the ASPCA, don't go there. And please let's not get into a debate on the ASPCA.

It sounds good...but the thing I'm worried about is will this open the door for more government control over our pets? As in, how many we are allowed, etc. Also, will this be allowed for people who take in strays/barn cats to be spayed/neutered? There is no proof of ownership there but it is still money out of pocket expense.

Just a few things to throw out there.
