When more govt. control would be better

This is a long article, but well worth reading in its entirety:

Trail of E. Coli Shows Flaws in Inspection of Ground Beef

...eating ground beef is still a gamble. Neither the system meant to make the meat safe, nor the meat itself, is what consumers have been led to believe.
This is downright frightening. I usually buy organic beef and have it ground to order, but occasionally buy prepackaged ground meat to cook up pet food. I don't plan to do so anymore.

While I realize there's much that speaks in favor of free enterprise with as little government intervention as possible, the lack of self-monitoring in the meatpacking industry is appalling. If our food isn't safe, it's time for more government controls.

Ewww.....I'll have the chicken, thank you very much. And here, I thought the Mad Cow disease was my big beef worry.

I have known much of this for at least 1.5 decades and thus NEVER buy hambuger NOT grd on site and within a few hours... Luckily I live in an area where we know what ranch the meat came from and the butcher cuts and packs on site

Haven't been to a chicken house or processing plant, have you?

The dirtiest slaughterhouse is probably cleaner than the cleanest of home processors, which used to be very common.

Agribusiness and all connected to it are killing us by inches.
Then they support the health care industry to treat what we catch form the poisonous food they are selling us. Ain't America grand?

But it remains true that the place you are MOST likely to get food poisoning is in your own home. Mishandling of meat (both chicken and ground beef) is the leading cause.

And there was a good treatment for meat recently: Carbon monoxide packaging. It killed most pathogens and kept meat safe to eat for a long time in the refrigerator. But people got so freaked about the words that they raised such a stink that the process has largely been discontinued.

Yeah from about 1946 to about 1962. You could own a huge house, 2 cars, 4 kids and still go on vacation and go to the hospital
