Hello, and Thank you!

Hello from a new (and unexpected) cat "mom"! Just wanted to drop a note to say thanks to all the regulars here, who have been invaluable to me over the past few weeks.

About 2 weeks ago, my mother and I were visiting a relative's house, and we heard a cry through the open window. Long story short, there was an abandoned kitten holed up in the house next door. The house in question has been condemned, but like a pair of loons, my mother and I charged in and got the little rascal out. She was filthy, skinny, and quite wild at first, but calmed down surprisingly quickly, and by the time we got her fed and cleaned up, we were totally in love. The little girl, who I have since named Sophie, was estimated at roughly 5 weeks old when we got her to the vet the following day.

I had originally planned to give the kitten to a friend who is a cat lover, but I quickly realized that I was not going to be able to give her up so easily, and so I've been a frequent lurker over the past few weeks, reading up on all there is to know on this "mysterious" animal. My family and I have always had dogs, never a this is totally unknown territory for me. She really has been a pleasure though...she is intelligent, inquisitive, entertaining, and very affectionate, and has fit into my life surprisingly easily.

Anyway, thank you again to all for all the great information, advice, and adorable anecdotes and stories...I certainly appreciate all the information! I've done a LOT of Net research on cats and kittens in the past few weeks, but I've found 90% of the information I needed right here, without even having to ask, and I am SO grateful!

And just because I can't resist showing off "the baby," here's Sophie!

What a pretty baby! And she clearly loves you.

Yes, the cat is a mystery to non-cat people. And a kitten is even worse, since it operates so strongly on instinct.

Thanks for the warm welcome Good to know that there's a place to go to make sure I have all the right info. She is still something of a mystery to me, but I'm really looking forward to see how she grows and develops - I do hope she retains this affectionate nature, I have never met a cat so cuddly!

Anyway, you'll probably find me in the kitten forums before too long, driving you crazy with questions! I'm keeping her on the second floor for the time being (she's SO tiny, hasn't even had her shots yet - the vet wanted to wait until she hit 8 weeks or so - and she has an umbilical hernia, which puts me in Overprotective Mom Mode), but I will probably need lots of guidance when the time comes to introduce her to our family dogs!

See you guys and gals in the the meantime, here's another (better) shot of my little computer nerd, who likes to "help" me on the PC.
