Is it ok to give cats sardines as an occasional treat? They were on sale and I bought some unsalted in spring water.

Yeah - I know. Fancy. I don't like them at all, but I thought my boys might.

I would say so... Bugsy eats Tiki sardine cutlets, but essentially almost the same thing... (Tiki has supplements making it balanced to be used as solo source of nutrition)

Cool. Not looking to FEED, just treat. Trying not to use the crappy processed treats with the guys, tho' they suuuure like them. And why not, they are coated with yummy fat!

I take it they can handle the skin and bones.

Well, the sardines were a hit!!! Even finicky boy Rex had a chunk. So I went back and bought more... very mindful of ensuring they were skin and bone types, not too salty - bought some in olive oil and some in spring water - all either low to no salt added. I'm thinking as a treat maybe 2x week. I just have too many mouths to feed and they are all male - worried about urinary issues. Touch wood - nothing in that arena yet.

My current crew wouldn't give you a thankyou for any fish, BUT in an earlier day, when the ruling troika was Shasta, Gryphon and Nibs, sardines were a much valued treat. Their Grampa bought them sardines, and they shared a tin every week or so -- one tin did two treats each, and they went bananas over them. The boys never had any urinary issues, and both lived into their teens. I used to mash the sardines down for them, which gave me the opportunity to watch for bones, but they were never really an issue.

I can't wait to try them because with Jack not keeping wet food down well he still cries in the kitchen now and again for some when i go in and i feel awful

Even if he has a small teaspoon a day it's something for him to look forward to
