OK, I've been trying to find out what the real story is about was he convicted or not, time served of 42 days then released on bail - how does that work?
Here's the story. I don't know that it will change anyone's mind about whether or not he should be extradited, or if what he did was actually wrong or not, but here goes. This information was extracted from multiple stories that I read tonight on AP. The best and most information I got was from this article
but various parts and pieces were verified by other articles.
In 1977, Roman Polanski was indicted on 6 felony charges stemming from a single incident. He was 44 years old, the girl was 13. What the girl said in her Grand Jury Testimony was that he gave her champagne and at least a part of a Quaalude at a "modeling photoshoot". He then took nude photos of her in a hot tub, and even though she protested and asked to go home, he had sex with her vaginally and anally. The charges include rape by use of drugs, sodomy, and child molestation.
The Prosecutors agreed to drop the 5 worst charges and accept his guilty plea to "unlawful sexual conduct" because the girl/victim did not want to testify again in front of a jury, and the prosecutors didn't want her to become infamous because of the incident. She later came forward and outed herself, years later.
The judge in the case agreed to send Polanski to prison for a 90 day psychological evaluation. He was released after 42 days on bond and at that time was led to believe that he would be sentenced to "time served". However, there were rumors that the judge planned to add more jail time, and Polanski fled the country on the eve of his sentencing hearing. He has been living the life of luxury, making movies and being a celebrity ever since.
Going by this, and like I said this was gleaned from multiple articles, I don't see how Whoopi or anyone can say he didn't "rape-rape" anyone. I guess date rape isn't actually rape either? It was not
just a matter of he was 44, she was 13, everything was consensual but he got in trouble because of her age.
