A new guest in our house

Awww, little Jeeves needs extra ! I so hope he gets better real soon! You are doing whats best for everyone, keeping them separate till he is healthy. I have spent a night or two in the bathtub with a kitty for similar reasons!

He is so sweet and tiny too! That's so sad that he is lonely, perhaps staying with him and give him lots of toys, water and nummies. I hope he gets better soon and am hopeful that he will.

The shelter came to the same conclusion as the vet, and after his coccidia treatment was done, they put him out for adoption. But after only about a week, he came down with a URI. They treated it for a week, but his coccidia flared back up. They concluded that with the stress, etc., of the shelter, that they weren't confident of gettting him cured. They called us and asked if we wanted to foster him again for a while, in hopes of the calm house helping him heal.

So, we brought him home again. We have the amoxycillin for the URI, and albon for his coccidia. But he's desparately lonely isolated in the bathroom.

Does anyone have any suggestions of how we can get him better ASAP? Especially, what can we do to get him able to deal with the house cats, especially Sterling, who dearly loved him.

Mike, a couple thoughts come to mind:

- probiotics such as holistic solutions to help out his digestive tract (especially with the antibiotics)
- immune booster such as transfer factor (there's threads on it in the health forum)

re: URI..... was he swabbed and tested for what virus is causing the URI? The reason I ask is because 2 of my cats get repeated URIs, and we (vet and I) thought they were chronic carriers as we'd treat them with clavamox and the URI kept returning after a few weeks. (no stress here, its the same ol same ol) Anyways, I took the advice of someone on here, and had an URI panel done on one of them.....then we figured out why the antibiotics never worked. My kitties URIs stemmed from mycoplasma felis, not herpesvirus or calicivirus (the common uri viruses). Now the kitties are on 4-6wks worth of a different antibiotic, and it has worked great so far.

anyways, my point being that possibly the uri comes back because he is not on the right antibiotics.

He's actually doing quite well, in spite of the problems. Dottie heard him sneeze once, but I haven't. His eye is still weepy, but it was from the day he was brought into the shelter. He is alert, playful, svelte, active, and shows no signs of weight loss or anything. However, he does produce cow patties rather than tootsie rolls in the litter box.

And he is so lovable, it's killing us to isolate him.

But looking at the records from the vet, it looks like he might have missed a couple of days of antibiotic and albon, sometime last week.

I read that coccidia is not easily killed by bleach, but rather by ammonia. Does anyone have any suggest of a way we can clean his paws, etc., so he can at least come out and play with Sterling once his URI seems to have come to an end?

I have concluded this is something Sterling does on purpose. He has a long history.

Awww, he looks so much like my Wiggies!! And Sterling is gorgeous, I don't blame the others for chasing his tail.

As for coccidia, Wiggies had a problem with that for the longest time. He had disgusting diarrhea all the time and would get it on his paws and track it around. The vets weren't very helpful in dealing with it. Poor little boy.
We have found that giving him psyllium husks everyday mixed in with his (grain free wet) food has turned him around. He did go on a course of antibiotics and I think that helped, then the fibre keeps his digestive tract functioning well. We also give him a high fibre kibble (Royal Canin hairball relief) as well. He no longer has runny stools at all, and the smell has been greatly improved.

Baycox wipes out coccidia in one treatment and it won't come back. Albon is just not effective enough and if the kitten is stressed it comes back.

The problem is that Baycox is not readily available in the US. We purchased ours from a supplier in Australia.

Since we stopped breeding, we handed over our bottle of it to a fellow breeder, otherwise, I would have shipped it to you.

20% bleach solution will kill coccidia. Wipe down everything he walks on twice daily. Empty and bleach his litter box daily, or swap boxes out with bleached clean boxes. Dis-infect food and water bowls daily.

I don't recall which store in Australia we got the Baycox from, but if you're interested in ordering it, I will do some research for you.

If we don't defeat it here with this round of albon (and, as you say, the idea of albon is just to reduce the parasite load so the cat's own immunity can keep it down after that), I'll check with you. I've seen it online, but I wasn't sure what to get.

Does anyone have any access to Baycox where you live? I think it's available in Canada, for one.

I have never heard of Baycox here..... but then I haven't had an issue that would require it.

How is Jeeves doing? Any updated pics of the handsome man?

I called our vet just now to ask about Baycox. They do not use Baycox nor do they use Alban as they said the coccidia just comes back. They use S125 or S250 depending on weight. I asked about getting a prescription and they will not give me one unless it was for my cat and they were able to see my cat. If they would, I would gladly get it and send it to you. Ask your vet about the S125 or S250.
