So i need some help with my cat (Gizmo), he is driving my bonkers and here is my story.....

So my fiance (andrew) and i live with his parents right now and they have 2 outdoor/indoor cats, and the neighbors cat stops by every once in a while. So this month andrew decided that he wanted to start taking Gizmo outside on a leash and harness because he is just moping around looking kind of depressed, and we figure it was because all the other cats can go out and he cant.

At night when we sleep he has to be in our room because his mom lets that cats in and out though out the night and we dont want her to accidently let him out (she let a raccoon in once). Also one of the cats always comes in to our room and sprays. So we keep the door closed so he cant get in.

Well for the past 3 weeks, every morning between the hours of 5:30-8:30 he is up, meowing, scratching at the door, going in to the window and scratching at the screen and trying to get through the blinds, jumping on the bed and walking on top of us jumping off the bed then jumping back on the bed. He does everything and anything but doesnt get anywhere with it.

We have tried taking him out more during the day to tire him out, tried to prevent him from sleeping before we went to bed (i know its nots nice but we tried it once), tried playing with him and nothing works, he is up at the same time every morning. Then at about 8:30 he lays down and goes back to sleep.

does anyone have ANY ideas for me, im slowly going crazy over here lol.

Go to bed earlier and wake up earlier to adjust to his schedule. Seriously, it sounds like he's probably hungry. Do you leave food out for him to munch on? Can you get up and feed him, then go back to sleep when he's finished and settled down?

I cant get up at 5:30 every morning. He has LOTS of toys, food, water, litter, he has like 4 different places to sleep, he has a cat tower, he has EVERYTHING. He falls asleep around like 8 pm which is to early for me and waking up at 5:30 and that is wayyyy to early.

Wake him up around 10 or so and play hard with him. Feed him a nice treat of some canned food before you go to bed. That will help his time clock adjust and maybe sleep later.

Cats are most active in the pre-dawn hours of the morning, about 4a-6am and then again in the evening around dusk. I get up at 5:15 AM everyday, so it can be done. You just have to adjust your sleep patterns. Now, if you work nights or a later shift (11-7 or 3-11), then waking up early like that isn't a wise choice.

We learned this morning that we have to wake up, fuss him like crazy, and eventually he might fall asleep. That might just be luck. so we will have to try it again.

So when kitty starts the early morning antics how do you react to them?

I think its absolutely absurd to think that you should change your schedule to make appease your cat. Our cats would love for us to get up at 5 am and feed them and play as well, but discipline must happen. They eat when I'm ready to get up and feed them, they aren't going to parish if they don't eat at 5AM. Because if I started feeding them at 5AM they'd decide 3 AM was more to their liking. We just ignore them--its not fun, it isn't always easy but its necessary. Jack learned pretty early on that we weren't going to do what he wanted at 5am. Harley came from the shelter so he was used to waiting for a meal and Pepper was already on my schedule being born and raised here.
