Mine aren't allowed on eating or food preparation surfaces. Other than that they have free run of the house.

Mine have full run of the house except for countertops, bookshelf, closets and on top of the table. I know they go on the counters when we're not home because I came home one day and saw Logan on the counter. He did not move until I picked him up and put him on the floor
.

We have 2 blankets and a towel on the couch they can sleep on but it also acts as a protector when they play tag and run around the apartment.

It was wrong of your friend to scold your cat, your house - your rules.

My cats are allowed anywhere they please, they are trained not to come on the counter only while I am preparing food and I wipe it down before use.

My cats go where ever they please. There is a bed on top of the refrigerator. There cat beds on my bed, there is a cat bed on my dresser. I do wish I could keep them off the kitchen counter & table, but i'm in such a small appartment that I don't feel it is fair to limit their space.

Mine aren't allowed on the kitchen table, the kitchen counters or the Dining Room table (except if they stay on the decorative runner - I'm shocked at how good they are about this.

Oh, they'e also not allowed on the floating shelf overhanging the stairs, but that's more because I'm afraid of them falling than anything.

Other then that, the rest of the house is fair game.

I couldn't agree with you more.

And as for the have you not noticed the mess animals leave on furniture..

well you ought to see the state the sofa after I spent the night sprawled out infront of the tv on it with a big packet of doritos.. thats one scary mess !

Come to think of it curtains is a no no here. I guess anything that is damagable they can't go on. As for the kitchen counter and tables they are always wiped down before and after use. I find some times the kitchen tap (or bathroom sink/bath tap) dripping ever so slightly for half an hour is a good encouragement to drink (and left over water can be caught in a bowl and placed in the water bowl for later so no waste)!

Ooh I do always tell them off if they descend on the hob though. I would hate them to land on it when its on EEK!

I don't think it would be possible to keep 7 cats from going where they wish in the house (including on furniture) without either chasing after them 24/7 or using some type of scat mats on all the furniture... Anyway going on the furniture is the only way they can get up high away from the dog. I have cat beds on top of the fireplace for the cats to sleep on.
I do discourage them from the kitchen counters and take them off anytime they go up there but it is pretty rare that they do that anyway. I also will tell them off if they get up on the mantle because there are breakable items up there. They usually aren't interested in climbing up there anyway because it is full of stuff, but once in a while one of them will notice the second hand of the clock (hanging above the mantle) and try to catch it!
Blaze likes to climb up on top of the china hutch and the sideboard (both very tall pieces of furniture) which makes me nervous because they're so high up. When on the sideboard he also likes to climb from there to the TOP of the upstairs door!

Sometimes this does cause a problem. Usually when I am trying to use the computer. One cat trying to sleep on the keys is fairly easy to move, but when there are two or more on the desk it can get difficult:

It can also be hard to find a place to sit at times:

We do our best to at least keep them off the counters and table where you eat. The counters are hard - they know they shouldn't be up there and they know they will be hollered at for doing so.

We keep it clean so there is no food up there to really attract them and give them an excuse.

Other then that - the cats can sit, sleep where they choose (other then the guest bedroom that is always closed to any pet.

My cats go where they please. Neither were kitchen counter kitties though. They only used a corner of it as a step up to get to the top of the fridge and then to the top of the cupboards. However they are both older and either too fat or not limber enough to jump that high. So they use the step route from lower furniture to higher stuff as needed. One of their favourite sleeping spots is the cupboard where I keep my large mixing bowls and pots. If I need to use anything from that cupboard, I wash it before using it, and again after using it and then put it away. I sometimes find Chynna sleeping with the top half of her body in my frying pan!

I keep them off the counters when I'm cooking, but other than that they have free run of the whole house and all the furniture. I'm lucky that they do not try to jump up on any of the shelves with all the bric a brac on them.

I'll be honest right now our house is free game to just about anything, as we are in the process of moving and its hard to maintain any set of rules with the house the way it is. They know they aren't allowed on the counters, but everything else is free game--we do try and discourage the dining room table, which we rarely eat on, mostly play board games at. Also the guest bedroom is off limits as I think it is unfair to guests to have to sleep in cat hair--you can only remove so much.

At the new house (we rent this house) the rules will change alittle more I think, d/t having more space. Both guest rooms will probably be off limits at the new house. But they'll go from having 4-5 windows to look out to like 15 windows to look out. It'll be a whole new world for them.

My kitties have always enjoyed all the comforts of home...
that includes the furniture.
After all, it's their furniture isn't it?

I love it! I have a plaque over my door that says, "Dogs have owners and cats have staff!" I have no difficulty in identifying who the staff is/are.
