Ok.. so right now I have a regular pan, nothing special. It used to have a ring around the top to keep the litter from spilling out on the floor, but I noticed really quickly that if that's on, my older girl refuses to use it. I believe it's because with her large amount of fur, she doesnt like to touch the edge of the box, so the lip makes it too small.
On the flip side of that, my little boy LOVES to flick litter everywhere. He has seriously gotten some wet litter to stick to the under side of my toilet (it's right next to it, since that the largest area of open space)

So what would be a good compromise? I'd prefer to have something covered so my guests dont have to see it, but I think my little girl would refuse to use it in that case..

Help?

The best thing would be to add a second litter box if you have the room. Three litter boxes for two cats is even better. You could put a closed litter box in the bathroom and an open one somewhere else.

Yep, some of us keep suggesting another box for that kitten.

Look for boxes with higher sides, if you can't find them look in the storage bin section at stores. Sterlite and Rubbermaid make some that have bottoms on them that would make scooping possible - some cheaper brands do too but you have to look around a bit.
A medium between tall but uncovered would be to take a regular storage container (around 22qts I think?) and cut a hole in the side but leave the lid off.

I have one very large clear Sterlite bin in the bedroom with the lid on it. My female cat that doesn't like the other covered boxes will use the clear one.

Yep, I use the 18-gallon silver Sterilite bins, with the lids off and a hole cut from just below the handle to 5 inches from the bottom. I use a utility knife (razor blade with a handle, basically) to cut it and it really is very easy. Sometimes they kick the litter out of the opening but mostly the litter scatter is contained, and if the boys spray it doesn't leave the box. I think Sterilite totes are WAY better than any litterbox, and I have tried so many litterboxes.....I should be an authority on the subject by now!
