My mom has just noticed that our 16 year old crf cat has started licking the metal fireplace grate. She thinks it's probably painted aluminum.

As far as she can tell, this is a behavior that started in the past few days.

My first thought is a deficiency of some sort. She's been on the dreaded Science Diet prescription food
, so it wouldn't surprise me for that to be the case.

Of course i've told her to put in a call to the vet if it gets more drastic, but I thought i'd see if anyone on here had thoughts first.

Can't help you. My 6 yr. old is CRF. She won't eat the prescription food, but she is on calcatriol. She is doing well so far.

I believe it is worth a call to the vet, as pica can be a sign of underlying health problems (e.g. anemia). Good luck to you, your mom, and your kitty!

Absolutely. Blood work is definitely in order.
