Gets one art history trivia point. Yes.
I too want to run naked through the woods now.

I adore Vincent van Gogh, and have prints of his work all over my house. In fact, when I look up from my monitor I have "The Starry Night" to look at. What a genius he was, the poor soul--so totally unappreciated during his lifetime.

I thought we were talking about "classical" or well known artists. Now, if we're talking about anyone (especially fantasy) my all time favorite is Boris Vallejo. I just love his understanding of the human body, and I have a book of pictures and poetry that just brings his pictures to life.

Also, this was a website that I found here (forgot who posted it...Maybe Snakelady? I know it was in a tattoo thread) that I fell in love with. In fact, I want to get a series of her fairy pictures to put in the living room.

He and many other fantasy artist are well known, though.
I like his wife's (Julie Bell) work, too.
Another person mentioned Whelan - he's probably one of the best known fantasy artists. Try walking through the fantasy and sci-fi section of any book store, you'll find at least a dozen books with his work on them and you won't even have to try very hard.

http://www.fantasygallery.net/ has several artists who are rather prolific and that several of us will probably recognize from books and magazines.

Well, maybe you haven't found a museum or gallery you like well enough yet?
Not too long ago I went to http://www.nationalcowboymuseum.org/ While their galleries are mostly western themed there were a lot of animal paintings and sculptures, too. Cougars were popular subjects - such as Gerald Balciar's Canyon Princess. The details on some of them were amazing. What was funny, though, were some people behind DH and I talking about how amazing a drawing of a horse in graphite was - while the drawings by the artist were good, I can and have sold drawings with the same amount of detail.
Back in high school I frequently lost work because people would steal it from my art class locker.

Look up "fantasy art" in google, there are a lot of galleries. http://www.elfwood.com/ has a mix of amazing artists and those who should probably take some art lessons.
There's some stories and poems on there, too.
There's http://www.epilogue.net/ that's similar, though they seem to be a bit pickier. (this artist's gallery http://www.epilogue.net/cgi/database...y=11954&genre= has some of the cutest paintings and little stories along with them - I love the fruit bats)

Honey, I live in West Virginia. The closest art galleries are Charlestown, Pittsburg, DC, Baltimore or Morgantown. All of which are an hour to 4 hour drive. Not something I can do on my day off since I have other things to do. But, I will keep it in mind if we ever get a chance to plan a vacation. The only way I actually get to see art is through the internet.

But thanks for the additional links that I wouldn't have know about. I do appreciate that!

^ I live in rural western Oklahoma. OKC is a little over an hour and a half away. Tulsa is far enough that if you plan to spend the day there you'll probably be spending the night, too. Isn't nice to be stuck in the middle of nowhere?

I used to consider myself an artist. I drew a lot at one point in my life and took several art classes in high school. I taught myself how to use Paint Shop and bought a tablet so I could do graphic images too.
I won't share my work here because some is pretty racey.

My favorite artist of all time is Mark Ryden http://www.markryden.com/index.html or Slavador Dali and his clocks.

I guess I just like surrelists work, although I never got the hang of the technique. I guess I just wasn't quite crazy enough.
