throwing it out. Does anyone know why she is doing this? Kiki has a covered litter box and I clean it at least twice a day. So why does she poop in the box then throw it out? I know she pooped in the box b/c it is always covered in litter. Unless she somehow manages to bring the litter out of the box to the poop?

She may just be flinging it out while trying to bury it, but that would take a pretty good aim since its covered. She may not like going back in and stepping on it the next time. I am not a fan of covered boxes for that reason. A cat IMO should have a choice of where to enter the box in case the area around the door is soiled. I know I wouldn't llike it. Cats are very clean creatures and do not like to step in urine or feces. Try removing the top for a day and see what happens. Yes, you may need to sweep. I keep a broom and dust pan right by the litter. Better than little tootsie rolls rolling around your house. Good luck.

I take it that you haven't actually seen her throwing out the poo?
Does she have long britches?

Two of mine have long fur britches, and the poo does get caught in the fur, and I do find it outside of the litter box.

No I haven't seen her do it. Kiki is a DSH orange tabby with a broken tail. So I don't think it's getting stuck to her. And it's not one or two little pieces it's usually the majority of the pile. Maybe she is just kicking it out of the door opening. I'll try taking the lid off and see if that helps.

Over the river and through the woods...
It sounds like she may just be over compensating? She knows she has to cover it up, but with kitten energy she may be digging a bit too hard. Then again, I once had a kitten that would do the same thing (only the box wasn't covered) and his poo became his toy for the day.
I would come home and he was batting and chasing his poo all over the floor. Thank god we had tile floor and not carpet!

Sorry just have to laugh - like my husband would say (and it's a musical slide) "Tho-se cats".

I think farlyv is on to something - gotta get that stuff outa there!

BTW - re: covered pans - I'm profoundly against them - mostly because the dust stays inside the pan while the cat is breathing - no matter what kind of litter you use, it still throws dust in their breathing air while they're in there doing their business.

A number of people on this site have cats that very vigorously bury their "business" so to speak. Their solution was to buy either very tall-sided litter pans or most use tall-sided sterilite plastic containers. The other thing to try (if simply removing the top to the litter box doesn't do the trick) is getting a pan that's larger than your litter pan and setting the litter pan inside of it - then when kitty tosses the poop, it goes into the other pan, not on the floor.
