I went to walmart this evening to buy some groceries and see if they had stocked anymore of the special kitty clumping with crystals--found it on the shelf for the first time about 2 weeks ago and have loved it. Anyway got to the register and they refused to sell it saying it was recalled, cashier was shocked it was still on the shelf. I asked why it was recalled the cashier couldn't give me an answer. I came right home and googled it and apparently Walmart is being vague about it. I'm vivid, do I need to empty the litter boxes? This is quite a cost for me. It takes a full 28 pounds to fill a box and I have 2 with this litter in it.

I just called and spoke with the store manager she had no reason either. Said they didn't have a reason and didn't have to give a reason and maybe in a few weeks they might have a reason to announce. I asked "so should my cats continue to use a cat litter that may or not be killing them?" and she got very snotty and again said they don't know whats wrong with the litter. I'm very very angry.

Who makes special kitty litter? I would go to their Website and try to find answers. Go above the Store manager at the Walmart and call her boss. I would be calling all kinds of people. Was it just the clumping litter or all special kitty litter? I think I buy the clay special kitty litter.

Special Kitty is the Walmart brand. I use the unscented clay litter. Not the clump stuff. I just bought 100 pounds of it today.

I did a search and I found a discussion on yahoo answers with some answers. I think we are not allowed to post links publicly, so if you would like the link to what I found please PM me

This is the response someone got from Wal-Mart. Apparently "Mimi" and "Special Kitty" are the same litter:

Dear Margaret,

Thank you for contacting us about the Mimi Cat Litter. We have forwarded your request to our buying office and we have received the following information to share with you.

The government has guidelines governing anti-bacterial statements that may not have been followed as closely as they should have, so we've asked the suppliers to reevaluate their packaging. There is no risk to human or animal health.

Again, thank you for contacting us and for your business. If we can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us by e-mail at www.walmartstores.com or by phone at 1-800-WAL-MART.

Sincerely,
Jennifer

That's the same info I have. I wasn't sure if posting messages from another forum was allowed, is why I told people to PM me. But for anyone who was going to...this was the post I saw. I also have the link to the entire thread.

Trapped in the catroom! ;o)
Reading this makes me happy that I put up the fight I did to keep kitties with "name-brand" litter..When BF goes shopping with me all he cares about is whats cheapest not what works for us. And he likes Special Kitty because its cheap at Wal-Mart...I fought tooth and nail that its my money my cats Im buying them Tidy Cats or Scoop Away because those are the only two litters that really cut back Hercules stinky pee till he gets fixed. With them being so vague about the answers as to why its being recalled just worries me a little because even that letter isnt very specific it seems to be just answering the bare minimum of what they need to say and I guess with WalMart getting such bad press lately they dont want to add to it.

That explains why Mimi litter isn't on the shelves right now. My grandma uses it because it's light and she can't be carrying huge boxes of clay litter around, and now she had to switch.

I can't for the life of me figure out what could make a litter "dangerous". Not like they eat it or anything. Sounds like Mimi was only recalled because the claims they made weren't substantiated. I'm sure it'll be back once they change the packaging to reflect the adjusted wording.

I do use Special Kitty clumping litter. I prefer it over Tidy Cats and Fresh Step because the fragrace isn't so overwhelming (bleh. Especially Fresh Step). Plus it works!

I'm happy to have stumbled on this discussion. We've been using Mimi litter from WalMart for years now, and it's the best litter we've found for our five cats. I've been extremely frustrated to not be able to buy it at WalMart. At our store, they still have some on the shelf, but they won't sell it! It looks hopeful that it will return to the shelf after repackaging.

In the meantime, we went back to Pet Essentials Crystal Cat Litter in 8 pound jugs from Target. We don't like it quite as much as the Mimi (the crystals are a bit larger), but it's still better than any of the name brand litters. Those stink. Literally.

Chris.

I would like the link about the litter.  Thanks.
This thread is from 2009, so the information is probably out of date. I think you would need to do a new search to get the most recent updates.

Oh, and welcome to TCS. :wavey:
