Such a sweet story.

Very sweet.

Hi,

sweet story, yes. But in my eyes it would have been a better story if the zoo had introduced the extra four females to enable the "homosexual" penguins to mate with a female. This is an endangered species so no- not everybody wins in this case.

Does it occur to ANYONE that the penquins are NOT gay and only behaving this way because in the wild the male penquins take on sharing the responsibility of keeping the egg warm and the chicks warm?

This is nothing more then people trying to justify "gay" - the penquins aren't gay at all!

... you're right, being homosexual is a natural thing and doesn't need any justifications

There are homosexual animals so it's possible that some of these penguins might actually be homosexual- there's no way to tell at the moment. I just don't quite believe that this zoo had the misfortune ( in view of their breeding program for this endangered species) to end up with on third gay animals.

They should introduce more females or else give the male penguins which don't have a partner to another zoo with too many females. If the male couples stay together even though there are enough females then so be it and they are really homosexual , if not then not.

I AGREE!!!! And it's another example of anthropomorphizing....GAY is a HUMAN term. It is essentially a nickname for a homosexual individual. This is just DUMB. Not cute at all (at least not the way it was portrayed!!).

How could the zoo actually ALLOW itself to be bullied like that re: introducing breeding females?? Ridiculous.

Interesting coincidence. I was SURE when I saw the subject title, that this topic would be about the BOOK being forced on public schools (a STORY about "gay" penguin dads)....hmmmmmm...interesting coincidence. Anybody see that story on Fox news?

Are we SURE about this? Has this been proven? How? I'd love to see a study substantiating this. I'm not denying that it is possible, but I have never heard of this at all!

Thanks.
No matter what, I still feel the same way about the story.

These are just some articles from "serious" websites that refer to studies/books, rather than the studies themselves:

Yes, that's the bit that really annoys me. Zoos should be about educating people and breeding endangered species.

You're either born heterosexuall, homosexual, bisexual or transgender. Shouldn't be a big deal.

On the other hand the zoo shouldn't have exactly said it was going to "test the birds homosexuality" by introducing the females Really very sensitively put by the zoo. The word "test" implies too much, no wonder gay rights people got on the case. They should have simply introduced the females without going to the press about it.

Wiki'e also got a nice overview on homosexuall animals, by the way. Otherwise jcat's already posted some good links on the topic.

okay, interesting. Will have to check out all later. I'm still annoyed at the involvement of a gay rights group..c'mon..to me that was just taking it TOO far.

It kind of reminds me of another example where radicals compare apples and oranges...like when anti-purebred folks compare purebred breeding programs to Hitler. Or, it would be like if I said I was against designer breeds (such as cockapoos--what a DUMB name btw!)...and someone called me racist because of it. I see the same lack of logic here being applied, in humanizing this situation of the so called "gay" penguins and the outrage expressed by the gay rights group. Just my analogy and my take on it.

Beyond the controversy- I'm glad that these two penguins were able to nurture the egg, resulting in a new penguin life for this endangered species.

Leave those Penguins alone. Next thing you know. They are going for marital status.
