i just discovered them by accident on youtube. they're a Finnish group with a female singer and classified as 'symphonic rock'. my fav songs so far are 'sleeping sun', 'islander' and 'end of all hope'. that girl has a great voice

A bit behind, aren't you?
Nightwish have been around for quite a while, and it was Tarja who really made them popular... I can't stand Tarja's voice.

Anette Olzon has more of a pop/rock type voice, which I can tolerate but she can sound bad, too. Their best vocalist (mostly because he's also rather unique sounding) is Marco Hietala - if you like his voice check out Tarot, a band that's been around since the 80s.

If you like the more pop sound that current Nightwish has you might want to check out Indica. Their last album was a little heavier, probably due to Holopainen influence. Despite the pop sound I find them rather catchy.
You'll probably like this song, too Pain - Follow Me. A rather mainstream song for Peter Tagtgren, even compared to the rest of the album it's from.

Back to female vocalists, try After Forever, Stream of Passion, To-mera (for an interesting one). There's also Epica which a lot of people like.

If you have any questions about metal, ask. If I haven't memorized and am able to list several bands, their discographies, facts about them, who produced what albums/the studios they're out of, similar sounding bands, etc it will probably take me less than two minutes to find such info.

You and me both. As you know, I'm a huge Dream Theater fan, but I have a wide range of artists in my arsenal.

In response to TS, check out the band Ayreon. Specifically their albums "The Human Equation", "The Dream Sequencer", and "01011001". The Human Equation is one of my top 10 greatest albums of all time.

^Yep, Marcela Bovio first popped up on his The Human Equation album - the rest of the line up is top notch, too. Sadly Mike Baker died last year
If you haven't heard Shadow Gallery, you should try them out sometime.

To the OP: You may also like Delain, Xandria, and I forgot to mention Sinergy.

i'm a big fan of Dream Theatre too.
while on the subject of odd bands anybody here heard of Uriah Heep? they've been around for over 30 years but are more popular in Europe where i grrew up than in the US. Demons and Wizards is one of my fav albums

Uriah Heep aren't odd. But a lot of 70s metal that didn't turn more pop-like in the 80s isn't as well known. UFO is another one that gets overlooked.
I've also noticed that Deep Purple and Rainbow are much more popular in Europe and Japan than in the US.

A lot of kraut and old prog rock is virtually unknown here, too. I doubt a single person on this forum knows Eloy for example.

If you like prog in the Dream Theater vein, there are plenty of those bands I could suggest. Also, I hope you've checked out Mullmuzzler.
If you're wanting to look up specific bands and artists, I like these two sites - http://www.metal-archives.com/ and http://www.bnrmetal.com BNR has some hardrock on it as well. There's also http://www.musicmight.com/ - formally RockDetector.

i saw Uriah Heep a few years ago opening for Edgar Winter and Mark Farner. i got to meet the whole band and even got one of Mick Box's famous 'bear hugs'. i saw UFO a few times and met the whole band once and Micheal Schenker a few times. when he found out i was german he talked to me for quite a while.
since i guess i'm what you call a kraut whenever i get upset over something my DH calls me a Sauer Kraut

^I suppose there's always worse "pet" names to be had.
Kraut rock, though, was what the prog rock coming out of Germany got called. Some had it's own sound, and others sounded pretty much like their British equivalents.

A nice progressive music site I've always found useful http://www.progarchives.com/

Edgar Winter's - They Only Come Out at Night has one of the weirdest covers I've seen (Riot has stranger ones, though, with that..thing). It kind of stops you when you're walking through a store and see it out of the corner of your eye.

It's cool that you got to meet UFO! They came through here last year, iirc, and I wanted to go but DH doesn't really like older rock or metal.
In fact it's hard to get him to get out of the house for anything. I'm eying up a two day show in Fort Worth that has a lot of good bands... I doubt I could even remotely convincing him of going to that.

Unfortunately, people shouldn't get me started on music.

ETA: You mentioned liking Tarja's voice - you might like her solo.
