Pam - I have cut various stones, but do not have the metalworking skills. I have set stones in commercially available mountings. (14K gold, sterling silver, base metal)

I collect loose stones, crystals, and jewelry. My favorite pendant is a teardrop shaped rutilated quartz in a heavy silver setting. It had a blue topaz on the top of the setting, but it fell out. The only thing I had to replace it and plug the hole is a white topaz, and now it is not nearly as pretty, but there is just something about the way it feels that I love, so I still wear it almost every day.
I have 2 large wand shaped crystals, a rose quartz and an amethyst, that I use to press trigger points when doing a massage.
I have a set of 7 chakra stones that I keep in a brass bowl shaped like a cat's face. I also have several bottles of random polished stones that my grandma polished when i was a kid.

I collect too. Have picked up fools gold in the mountains, assorted odd rocks from rock piles around here, odd bits from gravel - best find was agatized wood - and specimins from rock shops when I get a chance to get to one. Best large find was an erratic picked out of one of the fields. Cousin gave it to me to see if my rockhound friends could identify it - still waiting but we THINK it may be jadite. I had it cut and polished for him, kept a slice and the rock and gem society kept a slice for analysis.

Jan, have you ever tried precious metal clay? I've been amazed at what people in the classes we've had at the store have been able to do with it... it's fairly expensive stuff, but small pieces can be annealed with a torch instead of a kiln, which cuts the cost 'way down!

NOt yet, for the same reason as you. Cost.

I have seen some lovely things made but others items made me think they wasted materials and time, IMO.

How in the world did I miss this thread???
I am a rock hound from years back. Many years.
My love started I don't quite remember when, but I remember being so happy when family vaccation time came around, to a lake, so I could look for pretty rocks! Wading around amongst the tadpoles in the shallows by the big rocks. Had quite a collection! (of rocks, not tadpoles)
All my collection is gone, not supprising as this was over 35 years ago. Except one. A piece of not to great looking orange quartz crystal looking thing.
When I became pagan, I took an interest in crystals, they attuned to me, or I attuned to them, as I said, rock hound, now with occult knowledge! (Paste that as a new and improved on a breakfast cerial)

I became fascinated with rose quartz. Something about it I just liked. Not really a pink person, but there was just an energy there. Got out my old orange rock, Dont know why, long forgotten at this point The orange was just the surface, It was rose quartz.
Opals! Sorry, that was unexpected. lol. That is my birthstone, and I love them, never found one in the wild though. I never bought one for myself, your not suposed to do that, bad mojo or something, unless your stone is that, just never wanted to temp fate.

You'd love some of my quartz specimens. From a 2 pounder I would take to schools, to a tiny double scepter specimen and some Jeffrey Quarry Solution Quartz specimens.

http://www.arcrystalmine.com/jqsq/SQ13.JPG for an example of Jeffrey Quartz.

Not a pink person, either, but I like pink gems.

Have you ever collected sea glass? I just saw a TV show on this recently. I had no idea this stuff was collectible, and is worth money! I'm going to look for it the next time I'm at the beach.

Google sea glass and you'll see what I mean!

I actually did pick up a small piece of brown glass when we were at the beach last week, I didn't realise it was made into jewellery until I googled it!

I`ve always been fascinated by gems, rocks and minerals but never pursued it as a hobby. My favorite is jade(nephrite and jadite).I feel it is the most beautiful prescious mineral one can work with.

I too love stons, gems etc. but haven't really collected them seriously. As a pagan (not the only one commenting in this thrad I think!) all my stones were gifted to me rather than bought by me. I have a piece of junky orange citrine that my gran gave me which I love and took as a charm into every exam I sat from Standard Grades in 2002 onwards.

Did I hear someone mention my most favorite thing in the whole world? (next to cats, that is!
).

I'm not into collecting gemstone rocks per se, but I do collect jewelry with different gemstones already set - which I intend on leaving to my granddaughter. I have a pretty good variety, but my absolute favorites are diamonds, opals, & rubies. Tanzanites are pretty cool, too.
