We have a problem with our 13 yr male indoor cat, he's neutered and long haired. We have had him since we found him as stray as a kitten. Lately he has not been using the litterbox. We have another cat a female spayed who's about 4 yrs but I'm pretty sure it's not her. We have 3 litterboxes that are kept pretty clean. I check them about every 2 -3 days. Does anyone have any ideas on how to stop this or why he's doing this?

First, read the sticky near the top of the Behavior forums titled "Inappropriate Peeing Problems Answered".

It's very important, especially with a male cat, to determine whether he is having trouble passing urine. If he is, he may have a potentionally life threatening problem with crystals in his urine that could block his urethra and requires immediate medical care. If he goes to the litter box frequently and passes little if any urine, he needs to go to the vet *immediately*.

If he doesn't seem to have problems passing urine, then the next question is has anything changed in the house recently?

I agree with vet check, and the cleaning with enzyme cleaners - plus, beginning to clean the boxes at least twice daily, every day - and checking about arthritis or differently sized boxes. He might be having some issues hopping in and out.

I've had great luck with Cat Attract litter - there's also a version, Senior Attract, specifically for older cats, obviously, and those with long-hair (more crystalline based litter, supposedly good for UTIs and for nothing getting caught up with the long hair).

Good luck - hope it's something relatively easy to treat.

Sorry - I didn't read the sticky. I did take him to the vet today and tonight I am going to try to get a urine sample! It should definitely be interesting. To top it off we are having a flea problem as well. I am sort having a hard time dealing with all of this. Thanks!
