I have a dell inspiron 1420 and the battery went permanently dead a few days ago...
I need to get a new one but I am not sure which one will work for this model. I don't want to buy from dell because i know it will be a rip off....Anyone have ideas from where to buy?

I bought one for my older laptop on e-bay, and while it looked identical, it didn't work. It slowed the laptop down to a crawl, no matter how long it charged.

So one from Dell may not be the worst thing.

did it say it would work for your model when you bought it? If it did, it's such a bummer
I bought one from ebay yesterday since I had been putting off buying it...It said it was new and that it's for my model and it was only $40 compared to $130 from dell..so I just couldn't pass it up even after reading your post lol ..If it doesn't work I'll probably return it and i'd be really mad .. it had a 1 year warranty so I hope the seller isn't bad to work with if there are problems.

It said it was supposed to work, but it didn't.

Just as a hint, if you use your laptop as a desktop, do NOT leave the battery in it unless the instructions say you have to. It will constantly be charging and discharging (just a little), and each one of those shortens its life.

I totally learned that the hard way.. I didn't use my laptop as a desktop until 3 weeks ago, when I was home for 2 weeks and I left it on my desk turned on with the battery inside for the entire 2 weeks...And by the end of the 2 weeks the battery stopped charging and was permanently dead
There was nothing wrong with it before then, and my other laptop is like 5 years old but the battery still runs so I'm pretty sure leaving it on while charging had to be the reason why it died after only a year and a half.

Is there a "Batteries Plus" store anywhere close to you? I've bought hard to find and specialty batteries from them for everything from Laptops to Yamahas, and they guarantee them to work in the application, and their prices are comparable to cheap.
