The store had a sale, and I bought a few cans for myself, but was wondering if its OK for the kitty to have some? The ingredients are pink salmon and salt (210 mg per serving, which is 1/4 cup, or 58g) no skin or bones. Of course I would not give her that much at one time, maybe a tablespoon or so as a treat. OK or no way?

I'm no expert, but I don't see the harm for an occasional treat. Mine drink the tuna juice from water packed human tuna, and sometimes they get a bite or two!

Salmon is very rich in oils. Just watch her/his stools, some cats have problems and get loose stools.

That said, one of the varieties I feed my crew is Primal Foods, Beef & Salmon and Chicken & Salmon.
It's a raw diet and they do just fine.

That is absulotely okay. I feed canned fish (salmon and sardines) about once a week as part of my cats' diet. I usually rinse it off a bit to remove any excess salt, but you don't have to. It's a great source of fatty acids and protein.

Most of my cats have not liked salmon. And I try to stay away from fish based foods like tuna or salmon. They get chicken, turkey, beef, lamb, or venison.

Males can be prone to more UTI's if fed too much fish based foods.

I miss my Riki (
) but I've always given my cats the juice from canned salmon, they've all really liked it (non more so then Riki though
) and I've never noticed health problems. Also the bones in canned salmon seem to be very easy to eat (must have something to do with the processing methods), the backbones are particularly delicious! So I've never worried about cats & canned salmon bones, only fresh.

Shrimp tails are a big seller too

Salmon is an excellent treat IMO - the oils are good for healthy skin and coat, and extra protein is always good for cats.
I always drain off the liquid from canned fish, as it will take most of the salt with it. You can also rinse the fish if you want to remove even more salt.

This is slightly off topic, but I've always wondered why most cats go batty over fish, when it is the least likely to be a part of their diet in the wild. Why do they love it so?

Cats seem to like stuff that stinks. At least it stinks to us. Seems that the more it stinks the better they like it.

Of course very fresh fish doesn't have much of an aroma, but we all know that fishy smell when the fish is....well not fresh.

Seems like that is a cool "I need to taste this" enticer for cats.

Thanks everyone for all the replies!
This would not be her main diet, just a now and then snack.
Gave her some today and she likes it a lot better than me! By that I mean my small studio apt now reeks of fish! Kinda put me off having a nice salmon salad sammich for dinner!

My cats love it so much that they've come to know the can. They see it come out of the pantry and their at my feet waiting.

I was using it as an enticement for my foster boy Archie to take his meds - first time I gave him some canned wild Alaskan salmon... he took a bite and then warned the other cats to back off of HIS food with that rrrrrrrrrwowowowowowowow... that cats do.

Uh, I think he liked it.

Elmo & Sophie get salmon when their wet food has run out and I can't be bothered to go to the shop to get any more. Luckily that's only every few months.

Most of the time, it's canned chicken or tuna. Juice and all!

As a once in a while treat, a bite or two of salmon should be fine. Fish shouldn't be a staple of a cat's diet (I'll find the pesky source of this info one of these days), but if you really want a fishy addition to your kitty's diet, you might try sardines, the no-salt added, packed in water variety. My cats share a 3.75 ounce can every week as part of their frankenprey menu, so I don't have to supplement with commercial salmon oil.

Sardines are among the safest fish to feed, since they are wild-caught, often in a sustainable manner, and are not likely to contain antibiotics. They grow to their adult size quickly, live only a half dozen or so years, and eat mostly plants, all of which limits their exposure to PCBs, mercury and other heavy metals and toxins. Since I offer such a small amount each week, the potential for UTI or other digestive issues is limited.

Not surprising that your cats like the taste of canned salmon.  I would soak it briefly to leech out some salt before I would give it to a cat.  That's what I do with supermarket sardines.  My gal gets canned fish about once-a-week, mixed in with her regular wet food (and sometimes dry food, too).
