Is it ok for cats to eat wild rye (I think that's what it is) as long as it hasn't been contaminated with any pesticides, etc.? Every August wild rye grows in our front yard, some of the cats love to eat the grass blades, others just love to play with the head before it dries out. Here's more information about it - http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=ELVI3

The seat of a John Deere tractor
it is a legitimate forage crop provided it is cut before the head forms. Cattle and horses seem to like it before it is mature, and eat it with no ill effects, so it isn't toxic if that is what you are looking for. It wll, like any other grass, probably make the cat puke. The only thing you have to watch is for mature seed heads as the awns can be a tad pointy and will work into skin.

Thanks. I always try to throw the heads away after they start to dry out because that's when the awns start getting a little sharp.
