Great (Effective) Government Agencies or Organizations

I'm tired of "Government can't do anything right." In no particular order, add to it if you would like to.

The FBI- I haven't even done anything wrong and I'm scared of 'em

NIH-Where drug research STARTS, not the pharmaceuticals!

Social Security Administration-My Dad always gets his money on time

IRS-They will find you

CDC-Just go to their UNBELIEVABLE website to get an inking of why. They keep us safe.

National Parks System-From sea to shining sea, amazing

The VA-Much improved over the last 10 years

FDA-again, keeps us safe

NYC Dept of Health and Mental Hygiene -a personal fave and a huge agency serving over 8 million people- I have to call them often with my job, never wait more than a minute or two to speak with a "real" person and I get emails almost daily to help me with my profession.

U.S. Treasury-Those new bills look like someone just ironed them!

Your local library, fire dept and police-Amen to them all!

There are plenty more if you just think about it.

NSA "National Security Agency," sometimes referred to as "No Such Agency." They have even listened to the conversations of Soviet leaders in their cars. They essentially can hear any phone call that is radio broadcast at any time, but they have "code words" that trigger recording.

At one time, you could not find out anything about this agency. Even their budget is hidden in other budget items. This is the group that often catches spies in the CIA and FBI. We may never know how many bombings and other disasters have been averted through their efforts.

I'm going to disagree on just a couple but this may be a local thing:

National Parks System: Went on a fabulous hike in the Santa Ynez Recreation area in Santa Barbara; beautiful except at the top where the water station was broken, clogged, infested with insects and the toilet (just a seat over a large hole - kind of neat as there are no walls so you go while looking at wonderful views) at the top area was rusted and overflowing (ew!).

Local Library: Torn books, hangout for bums, kids running rampant throughout. I could deal with the first two, but the kids using the place like a playground while the moms chat is just obnoxious! Though, I will say this may be an LA thing, when I lived in San Francisco the ONLY thing I liked up there was the library which was well stocked and cared for.

SSA - I probably wont like it when I retire as it will be bankrupt!

But for the most part, the others are run well enough but everyone could use a good scrubbing. Wasn't it too much red tape that caused important memos regarding 9/11 to be ignored?

Now, by "government" are you talking federal, state or local? I agree, most federal agencies do their jobs...it just takes them forever and a day to get it done. I am contracted worker for a federal agency and I honestly don't understand what takes them so long half the time.

But, a few things I want to point out...

Our library is funded by the county, our police are funded by city, county or state (depending on what kind you're talking about) and our firefighters here are completely volunteer. Yes, they get grants from the government which they have to apply for and fill out a ton of paperwork to get new equipment, but the firefighters DON'T get a government paycheck (I know, my DH is a volunteer). Most of their money comes from dinners and fund raisers.

As per my very abbreviated list, I was referring to fed, and local governments.

But for example, if you have a crappy local library you have to fight for a better one-it is for the most part for your children after all.

Bit of library trivia. The famous literary lions (really just big smelly cats! LOL!) that guard the front of NYC's main public (research) library are named Patience and Fortitude--named so by Mayor Fiorello Laguardia. He thought quite rightly that that was exactly what New Yorker's needed to get through the Great Depression!

I think their names are also fitting because God knows that's what you need to do research!
