Hi
I took Bugsy to the vet today, as his eye was a little irritated, and not getting better. It actually never got completely better from his last URI, and I wanted to make sure this is not going to impact his vision. I also wanted to check on his teeth condition, since I am postponing his dental treatment while treating with vitamins and supplements.
Anyway - let's go issue by issue:
1- Eyes: Per vet, he is very likely a chronic herpes carrier, and his eye will be irritated on and off for life. He said to continue to give 500mg of L-Lysine daily, as this is likely the reason why he hasn't had another URI, and is holding off so well. He told me that if it was not for the L-Lysine, his eye would be much worst too. He gave me terramycin to use 2x day, for 3-5 days, as needed.
2- Teeth: He was once again impressed with the the improvement of his gums - he said to keep up whatever I ma doing, and that it is much much better.
We both think we will be able to keep surgery at bay for a while!
While in there, I saw an ointment called Biotene - Antiseptic Oral Gel (enzymeatic formula for severe mouth infections, and asked him about it. He said it could very well help, and to try it - I will let you all know.
3- Weight: Bugsy is FAT!!! He weighs 18lbs, and the vet said he needs to los a good 2-3lbs. He also said to NOT put him in a diet - he rather see him fat than sick with Hepatic Lypidosis... He said that the time we worked on ER clinics was enough to leave him paranoid about it... So... He recommended 2 things:
*Adding fiber to his diet (recommended psyllum, but I am not sure if that's the best option?)
*Change his food to a food for diabetic cats, called Purina DM.
4- Overall Health: He told me flat out that Bugsy's immune system is messed up, really BAD, probably due to poor breeding practices and inbreeding. He said that considering he is purebred and a rare white ragdoll (usually pointed, white is a "new fad"), there is probably a very small gene pool, and he was likely the result of inbreeding... Anyway, hope I do make sense? So, all all his problems, are due to a BAD immune system... And he thinks he is not actually allergic to chicken - he thinks he probably has IBS.
I asked him if he can have a regular lifespam, with a good quality of life, and he said "Sure"!, but he will always require lots of TLC...
Just to wrap it up, he has been doing VERY well; besides this minor irritation on his eye, he is a healthy and strong boy... Hi gingivitis is getting better by the day, hasn't had an URI in a long time, and no Diarrhea attacks either!
I do take him to the vet more often than not due to his gingivitis - I want to keep it in check and prevent possible complications, such as internal infections...
Anyway - thanks for reading!!!! Please, if you do have experiences with Purina DM, I would love to hear it!
