I was at the pet store the other day and they had a shelter kitten for sale (aged a few months), when I would put my fingers through the bars to touch him he would grab my finger with his paws and put it in his mouth and lick it (it was so cute). Does this mean anything?

This is a social behavior. Cats do it to each other, too. It can be very complicated, indicated dominance, etc.

But mainly, he just wanted some attention from you. I hope he got it!

Many homeless cats have an ability to please themselves in.

Essentially, biologically it is for getting pals with potentially unfriendly other cats. But it works also for pacifing feks dogs - and us humans.
