Seeing as there's a thread about rising veterinary bills in IMO, and fwan remarked about the difference in vet costs between Australia and Germany
I thought it might be interesting to get an idea of what we're all paying for various vet services.

I live in Germany, which has a set fee schedule for vets (in German; they can charge up to three times the fixed fee depending on how complicated the case is, and all prices are without the usual 19% value added tax). I'm putting the prices in euros, US, Canadian and Australian dollars, as well as the pound sterling, for comparison.

Jamie has had two office visits this past week. Last week he had his vaccinations, and there was no extra charge for the office visit:

PHC (panleukopenia, herpes, calici): €30.25 (US $42.85/CAD 46.95/GBP 29.97/AUD 51.36)
feline leukemia: €22.12 ($31.33/CAD 34.32/GBP 19/AUD 37.56)

This morning he had a dental cleaning, urinalysis, and senior blood panel:

anesthesia, including prior exam, monitoring by tech and "wake-up shot":
€37.16 ($52.64/CAD 57.73/GBP 31.90/AUD 63)

dental cleaning, including antibiotics (10-day shot) and painkillers: €59.29
($84/CAD 92.11/GBP 50.90/AUD 100.65)

complete geriatric blood panel, including shipment to outside lab: €64 ($90.70/CAD 99.46/GBP 54.94/AUD 108.58)

urinalysis, including work at own lab & outside lab: €28.60 ($40.50/CAD 44.42/GBP 24.55/AUD 48.52)

Speutering costs €17.18 for a male ($24.30/CAD 26.68/GBP 14.74/AUD 29.16), and €51.54 for a female ($72.88/CAD 79.98/GBP 44.22/AUD 87.42), but you have to add the costs of anesthesia, antibiotics and painkillers as well as VAT.

Thanks for starting this thread; I'd love to be able to do a comparison for my region. I have a high opinion of my vet, but I'm starting to wonder about the expense relative to other offices in the area. Anyway, this vet is located in New England:

Office visit: US $60.00/CAD $65.00/EUR €42.00/GBP ₤36.00/AUD $71.00

FVRCP vaccine: US $30.00/CAD $33.00/EUR €21.00/GBP ₤18.00/AUD $36.00

Bloodwork: US $84.00 /CAD $92.00/EUR €59.00/GBP ₤51.00/$101.00 AUD

Annual fecal (not sure if they need this; they don't go outside and don't have fleas or GI issues): US $50.00/CAD $55.00/EUR €35.00/GBP ₤30.00/AUD $60.00

What I have the bills for still:

Always have to pay an "office call" fee, and it varies on how many cats I bring in.

All prices in Canadian.

Office visit: ( a physical exam ) $39 (for each additional cat $10...which is why I try to bring in all 3)

Feluk Test: $45
Xray $65
Booster shot (5in1) $20
Neuter: $65 (no office fee for speutering) includes anesthetic

I live in a small town and think the vet costs are lower than a lot of other places. I've never had to take my kitties for anything beyond routine care: shots, spay, etc.

Initial exam: $26
Exam with yearly shots: $15
No exam charge for kittens brought in with their mother (stray/recue)
Each vaccine or rabies shot: $8
Spay: $80 (includes anesthesia)
Neuter: $40 (includes anesthesia)
FeLV blood test: $30
Microchip (done with spay/neuter): $35

Wow all those prices are so much cheaper than my vet...

Cost me 63 Canadian just to walk into my vets
I just had 2 cats in for their shots and so called wellness exam...that was $180 and that was with a discount for bring in more than one pet...

I had a chihuahua break its leg last year ...sedating her...xrays and splinting her leg cost me $700...her splint fell off the next day and almost every few days afterwards and they charged me $200 each time to sedate her and splint it again...

I had a cat had to have an abbsses drained and it cost me $390

I just had another cat in because he wasn't well....for blood work and sub q fluids and meds to take home ( he didn't even take ) cost me $385

When I have my pets spayed/neutered it usually cost me close to $400 each time I always get pre op blood work as well...

I need to find a cheaper vet...

I also live in NE, specifically Massachusetts. Office visits are $50. Rabies (which is mandatory here) $30. Fecal is $39 (but they only need one sample for all 3 cats) Bloodwork can run over $100 depending on what they run. (Rocko will be getting this done starting next year) FVRCP Vaccine is same as Rabies $30. (done every 3 years for my cats)

I live in South Dakota. My vet is an older farm vet and his prices are very reasonable. I've been to other semi-local vets who charge twice as much. So the prices aren't really regional, they're mostly dependent on that particular vet.

I pay:
$90 for a cat spay
$65 for a cat neuter
$80 for a dental
$30 for FeLV/FIV testing
$25 for FeLV vaccine
$13.50 for FVCRP vaccine
$13.50 for rabies vaccine
$1.00 a dose for dewormer
$4.00 for a Drontal shot (for tapeworm)

The only vet I've had bloodwork done at was the emergency vet, and it was about $130 for a full panel. Don't know if my vet charges less or not, since he has to send the bloodwork to their (the e-vet's) lab anyway. Probably he does charge less, because of course the e-vet always costs more.

Wow, I guess I should feel lucky.

My kitty has only had two "regular" vet visits, but I think they were $35 (American) each. The rabies and FeLV/FIV testing were around $15 each. She was already spayed when I adopted her from the shelter.

What really got me was the ONE time I took her in to get her claws trimmed (she freaks out when I try to do it) and they charged me $25, presumably for a vet tech visit. It took them like 3 minutes to trim her claws, I was NOT happy. I have since found a technique that works for me to trim her myself.

Holy wow, what a difference in prices. The vet I use charges about $100 for a spay, $80 for a neuter (cats). Distemper shot is around $12, same for rabies. One pet exam is $25, if you bring in multiples it's $15/each pet. Yearly exams are $20. FeLV test is $15, FeLV/FIV test is $20. Urinalysis is $18, fecal check is $12.

This is interesting, thanks for starting this thread.

I don't have a "regular" vet yet--I moved to New York about 2 years ago and the only vet so far that I was absolutely satisfied with is WAY out of my price range. I've been to about 5 different practices so far--1 is the expensive one I can't go to regularly, and the other 4 I'm just not happy with, so I go where I have to when things come up. I moved to NY from Iowa, where things were MUCH cheaper, so I do whatever I can to save on their care here. All prices are USD.

I use the Animal Welfare League for low-cost neuter certificates, $40 for neutering, I think $70 or so for spaying, but I haven't had a female fixed here yet. This is the only way I can go to my favorite vet, who is a cat specialty clinic. With this certificate, I can also choose to get a rabies shot for an extra $10.

I use Luv My Pet vaccine clinic at Petco for my vaccinations and testing:
Rabies - $15.00
4 in 1 - $19.00
Felv Test - $25.00
Felv/FIV Test - $35.00

When I have to go to the emergency vet, office visit is about $110.

For all non-ER visits I go to Banfield Animal Hospital in PetSmart - they have free office visits for non-ill cats 2-4 PM every Tuesday and Thursday (obviously any treatments, tests, etc. are extra). I like this place because they are open a little later and open on Saturdays. I still don't like them though because when a cat had an accident and he was not an emergency, just bleeding a little bit from his anus, they turned him away and I had to put him back in the carrier and drive him even further for an emergency vet. Anyway, I pay $45 for an office visit there outside their free times.

I am going to start doing the 4 in 1 shot myself since we rescue animals at such a high rate anymore that I'd rather be able to do it myself cheaper than have to skip it and wait for the rescue group to take any cat I'm not keeping. I think I'll be getting a 10-dose vial for $25 from Drs. Foster and Smith and the needles are like $.25 each.

I know that vets are high in my area (Houston, TX suburbs), but I do trust this practice completely. When we first moved here 10 years ago I tried 3 different practices before I found this one I like. Every time I go the prices seem to go up just alittle bit. But on my most recent visits (in U.S. dollars):

nail trimming is complimentary at every visit
Exam, consultation: $ 59.00
Follow up exams (if needed) $ 44.50
Feline Leukemia/Feline AIDS Test $ 54.50
Fecal(flotation) exam $ 25.50
Regular X rays were $ 55.50, but when they got the new digital X rays went up to $109.50
Chemistry Profile $169.50
CBC (complete blood count) $ 61.00
24 hour emergency $109.50

What I find fascinating (and not in a good way) is how the costs have gone up over the years. Some things have gone up in cost only a little and other things have skyrocketed. The costs for a dental cleaning seem extreme, though I know other TCS members have said they pay around $600.

I was just looking at a bill from December 2008, and my vets charged €10.55 ($15/CAD 16.30/GBP 9/AUD 17.86) for a wellness exam and €34 ($48.54/CAD 52.50/GBP 29.23/AUD 57.58) for an abdominal X-ray.
