My Vet. told me to feed my cat a bland diet a while back after surgery. It consisted of meat juices, a bit of the meat, and water to thin, mixed into rice.
Now, whenever I cook meat, I set aside the juice, fat and skin, and make up some rice. I add the meat items into the rice, and serve to the ferals. They just love it, and it costs next to nothing for me. I also put leftover soups/stews, etc. over rice, too. The cats love the "treats". Variety is the spice of life.

You must also remember, practically any meat is OK for cats, especially ferals... Thus also cheap meats or meat parts you wouldnt voluntarily consider as meat for humans. Having it perhaps in soup if really forced... It doesnt need to be prima muscle-meat!

Also most "byproducts" are really good cat food.

Byproducts in cat food have a bad reputation, as in the industry you never know what they are really putting in. IF the law isnt really strict, they can be putting in everything, from old carcasses from self death animals, through beaks and feets, to bloody sawdust. Bloody dust is quite common in less particular firms...
Hearts, lungs, kidneys, some grinded cartilago, is only to dream about...

Home byproducts are always good, as you yourself see it is real and either not too old.
Even some bird feet, beak or head isnt so bad, as long it is not the main part and well grinded. Hey, heads are useful.
