I usually don't trim Miss Kitty's nails as she is a day-time outdoor cat (she never goes more then 30' from the door). She brings in at least two shrews a day plus there are some feral barn cats in the area so I want her to be able to defend herself if need be. However I just noticed her up in our tree sunning herself (or waiting for the birdies
) and two of her nails have split.

Obviously frequent nail-trimming is what I do with the indoor cats to keep their nails from splitting, but what should I do for M.K.? I know she'll still be able to hunt with her nails done, but I'm more concerned with her defending herself (although she has lots of places to hide and I'm sure I'd hear something if there was a hub-bub).
