I just got the results of Mama Mia's blood test for becoming a blood donor, and even though she was cleared to become a blood donor, the results did say that she had a slight increase in albumin. What is that, and what does this mean? It can't be anything serious because she is ok to donate blood, but it was still mentioned in the letter. Any explanations for this???

High albumin levels usually reflect dehydration.

It seems to be related to human blood testing but I'm assuming albumin is present in both humans and cats and probably reacts the same way.

Perhaps before your kitty was tested she had just not drank enough water that day?
It sounds fine. Every thing negative I can find about albumin levels seems to be only surround low levels and how it's related to liver problems.

I don't know if you've seen this site at all but this explains what each blood test is.

Here's a more extensive piece of reading for you from a reputable site...it's a good overview of kidney function and, about 2/3 down, you'll find a section "Low Blood Albumin Level found on a blood panel".

If Mama Mia were here, I would want to explore this further with my Vet....that said, I would not want you to be overly anxious...just aware that something's going on in there. I'm also thinking that I wouldn't want her being a blood donor until at least I had gotten to the bottom of it all.

Now, here's the article.
