how much hair is normal?

I have a medium long hair cat, part Maine Coon.... he sheds like mad right now.. I'm wondering how much hair is "normal" shedding and when might there be cause for concern?

I brush him every day, and his coat is shiny and healthy, but I often get golf-ball to baseball size balls of fur that come off him every day! when you guys brush your cats, how much hair do you normally get in the brush???

I have four DSH cats and use the furminator rather than a brush. With Cali and Iris I get just a few hairs each time. Shareena doesn't shed much, but I still get a handful of fluff doing it about once a week. Miss Patchwillow sheds like crazy in the summer. I use the furminator on her once or twice a week and can get half a waste basket full. If I pack it down it would probably fit into a quart-size freezer bag.

I've never had long-haired cats, so don't know what is normal. I have read that it's actually the undercoat that sheds more than the long outer coat.

I have three medium to long hairs and they shed very little right now--they have a big shed in the spring. I comb Harley once a week and get maybe a large marble sized amount off him if that. Jack I try and come 2-3 times a week simply because he knots more. I get probably the same amount off him each time I comb. The kitten doesn't really shed yet but I comb her when I comb Jack.

I used to get a lot of fur when they were fed solely dry food. Now that their diet is 85% wet much less shedding.
