I am adopting a kitten from a shelter and of course they wonâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t let you take the kitten unless they are spayed or neutered. I will probably adopt a 2 month old kitten.
Isnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t 2 months old too young to be spayed/neutered. I am really worried about this. Donâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t they need to be at least 4 months old?

Many rescues are spaying or neutering when the kitten is 2 pounds, which is approximately 2 months. As long as the kitten is healthy and weighs the 2 pounds, it should recover just fine.

I adopted Oscar when he was 2 months, and he was already neutered. He's just fine.

8-10 weeks is a pretty standard desexing age these days, you have no reason to worry.

Just wanted to provide another word of reassurance. At shelters around here, neutering at 2 lbs/2 months is standard operating procedure. Your kitten should do just fine!

IMO 8 weeks old is really pushing it. I prefer 3 or 4 months old. But can understand why the shelters have to do them sooner - because people won't be responsible to do it when it should be done - then you end up with another pregnant kitten/cat!

My shelter does them at 8 weeks. It's not ideal, but it's what we have to do to get them out there and able to be adopted.

I rescued Alley from the street when she was approx. 8-9 wks old and my vet wanted her to have all her shots, etc. before doing the operation.Alley will be close to 5 months old when she gets spayed(8/14/09).I hear that if a kitten is 2 lbs or more in weight they can do the Px without a problem. It`s up to your vet and you I guess.
Peronally,I`m glad I am having it done at the time I am i.e. older and wiser? lol
Good luck whatever you decide!

My sphynx had to be 3.1 pounds before she was spayed and she was 3.5 months.
I believe in the case of breeder cats, they do wait a bit longer. For your average kitty most vets will do it at 2 lbs. They probably recover much more quickly when they are younger as well if they are anything like the human mammal.

My vet does not believe in early spay/neuter for several reasons, but from what I've read, it does seem to be more "popular" with shelters, that once the cat reaches 2lbs to have them spayed/neutered.
