Hi,
My cat has had diarrhea for twice in a two week period. The first time, she had the runs for 2 days, and it just started again.

One year ago, she had a bout of diarrhea, and my vet NEVER provided any definitive answers. Just said in the end that she MIGHT have ate a bad bug.

What could be wrong? What can cause this? Could it be the heat? It's been hot around here lately. She hasn't been eating anything different and she never goes outdoors.

Please, will someone answer this time?

Thank you.

I know you've had some nasty heat out there - that would be my guess. And... with summer comes different bugs - maybe there is one she particularly goes after.

Someone with more knowledge than me will probably come along and give a better possible explanation.

In the meantime, good luck - I know it's frustrating!

I wish I could help you out but diarrhea can be the result of so many things from parasites, to bacterial infections, to food (#1 reason), to IBS, to something as simple as the heat. Those are just a few things that could cause diarrhea.

If she has not been outside and there has been no food change and the diarrhea has started suddenly I wonder if it is possible she got into something? A chemical, human food, milk (cats are lactose intolerant). The heat very well could be the reason as well or maybe she has irritable bowel syndrome? Cats, like people can have flare ups and then go into remission.

Have you recently brought another cat into the house? Or been around another cat and then gone home?

I really wish I could be of more help. The MAIN reason for diarrhea in cats is a diagreement with food.

If it continues I would suggest taking her to the vets for a check up. In the mean time, buy some Organic Yogurt (Probiotic), plain. I buy mine at Sobeys. I give my cats 1tsp daily. "Probiotic bacteria such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli inhibit the growth of disease-causing bacteria, particularly those responsible for gastrointestinal infections and bowel disease. Probiotics modulate the immune system. They can also help the immune system fight off conditions such as infectious diarrhea.â€"

You can also give some canned pumpkin. This will help firm her up.

Good luck and KUP!

Thank you so much to the replies! We haven't had any contact with other cats, and she hasn't been eating anything new. I'm very careful about what she eats, and I've cat-proofed all my cupboards to make sure she doesn't get into any chemicals.

I didn't know heat can cause diarrhea, but it has been HOT here lately. I'll be more careful about keeping her cool.

And I wish I could get rid of all the bugs! Because I can't keep my eye on her 24/7, she's bound to eat a bug or two at some point. *sigh*

I'll be keeping a close eye on her to see if the diarrhea comes back. In the mean time, I wish there's more I can do for her to make her more comfortable. I'll definitely be trying the plain yogurt. Is there anything else I can do?

Thank you so much!

Please make sure it is plain (probiotic) yogurt or it's useless. I buy the Organic plain probiotic yogurt at Sobeys in the Organic section.

Canned pumpkin is also suppose to help stop diarrhea. Also, Iam's Hairball is a great food to firm her up. Even if you buy a small bag and mix it with the food she is on. This should help a great deal (depending on the cause of the diarrhea).

Good Luck!!
Take care

When my kitties are sick and on antibiotics, we give them half a capsule of acidophilus, which is what's in the yogurt that helps. We just break open a capsule, pour half of the powder on their food, mix it up and it goes down the hatch. It helps them tremendously! We've also used it when they've had softer than normal stools and again recently when my cat had diarrhea due to something she ate (ice cream, we think). Worked like a charm!

I just wanted to clear up this statement - not all cats are lactose intolerant but many are.

Have you changed your cat's food recently?

Changes in the diet can cause problems if not done correctly.

Nope, no food changes. She still eats the exact same things. I think maybe she ate a bad bug. I try to keep my eye out for any and all bugs, but I'm out in California and it's hot here, so there are lots of bugs.

I hope the runs won't come back again. She's been good since I started her on the yogurt almost a week ago. I've been giving her a spoonful everyday, should I continue? Is it good for them to have yogurt everyday? How long should I give her the yogurt for?

Thanks!
