Good morning Jenny.

I repeat one of Gail's questions:

1. When are we going to get an update on Maisey and foals (well they're not exactly foals anymore)?

2. Have you had any paying customers for your cottage?

3. And, of course, how is one of my favourite kitties, Persil?

Hi everyone. First let me apologise for not being online sooner today - it is !800 PM here now. But it has baan a very difficult day and I will post int he Bridge about why (don't panic, not one of mine)

So - First lot of questions. I will be as comprehensive as I can, so if it gets long, bear with me.

.- ¿Do you know MÃ[emoji]169[/emoji]xico?…as a country or as a city?

I have been to Mexico several times - the first wehen I was 12 years old and I went to Monterey and Saltillo. Then in 1987/8 when I lived in LA, I used to go to Tijuana to shop, especially for Christmas decorations and fabrics. Great shopping there!2.-

¿Wich part exactly? are you came by business or by vacations?

All of those visits were kind of vacations - even the day trips!

3.- Have you ever hearded about MÃ[emoji]169[/emoji]rida Yucatán MÃ[emoji]169[/emoji]xico????.... Is the place where I´m live!….As you can see in Yucatán is located Chichen Itza (Mayan Ruins) one of the New 7 wonders of the Modern world!...
Here´s the link my friend..(about my city and you can see something too about Chichen….http://www.yucatantoday.com/index.php

One of my big wishes is to visit Chichen Itza. I will go one day.

4.- Can you speak spanish?

Only enough to order a drink (Margarita) or ask for directions and not understand the answer. My daughter speaks it though, and the last few times I have been to Spain she has been with me.

5.- Do you have some CD of Spanish music? do you like it?

I do like Spanish music, especially Spanish guitar. I used to be friends with Juam Martin, a wonderful professional Spanish musician, and I went to many of his concerts.

6.- Have you ever to watched a Mexican Movie? ( I mean with Spanish Dialogs?)

When I was in Bosnia I bought a number of Mexican movies and Novellas for my TV station, and we subtitled them into Bosnian. They were very popular.

7.-Do you like the Mexican Food?( do you have any preference for example: burritos, Tacos, rice & beans, etc?)

I love Mexican food - if it is good quality. Not so keen on the fast food which is not real Mexican anyway. My favourite is probably Fajitas. But I do love Nacos with beans and chili. ANd of course I could live on Guacamole.

8.-Do you like the Tequila?...or else Mexican Alcoholic beverage?

Only in Margaritas. And I like Mexican beer.

9.- Have you ever to sleeped in a hammock?

Yes, on horse camping trips in Californai and in Africa.

10.- Have you ever to saw the traditional mexican clothes?

Yes, I have bought several woven blankets and capes. They are very practical on cold evenings.

11.- Do you to know Cancun Mexico? ( Is a beach) ( here´s the link my friend: )

Sadly I have never been there, but would love to one day.

SO here we go:

1. do you have any tattoos? If so, what and do they have meanings behind them that you are comfortable sharing.

No, I have always been afraid of the pain! My friend has a beautiful butterfly on her shoulder and I have always envied it.

2. do you have any piercings? aside from the ears.

No, only ears and sadly I can't wear earrings any more as I seem to be allergic to all of them and my ears swell up.

3. Have you ever held a snake? If so, did you enjoy it or were you uncomfortable?

I have no problem with snakes or any other reptile. I was picking up toads only yesterday in the garden. And yes, I have held snakes several times. I didn't much enjoy clearing up the decapitated one that Dushka brought in once, though.

4. What is on your MP3 player right now? (or cd player, whatever fits)

Dido and Aeneas - I love that opera.

5. How many tvs do you have?

Only one for me, in a cupboard in the living room, so I can close it off and it doesn't 'look' at me all the time. In the gite there are two for hte guests.

6. What is your all time favorite bought chocolate?

Don't get me going! I love Lindt white chocolate with almonds. Second choice, any white chocolate with nuts.

7. Whats your favorite colour, least favorite colour?

Difficult one, I like purple for clothes, pale yellow for walls. But people say I look best in red. I hate brown.

8. What's the last movie you've seen?

Can't remember. I haven't seen a movie for at least four years. ANd I don't much like watching them on TV either, so I watch bits till I get bored.

9. What's the last book you've read?

A few days ago I finished Thomas Keneally's 'The Playmaker', a novel about the convict days in Australia. It is based on the real journals of a soldier in the garrison. But I always have at least four books in various parts of the house, ready to pick up when I feel like it. I am reading a history of the Mediterranean Sea, a novel by Catherine Cookson, Colette's 'Dialogues avec les Betes' and a biography of the great admiral Lord Cochrane.

10. Have you ever been anywhere on an actual holiday/vacation? (not counting any work trips)

Yes, the last one was a cruise to Alaska in 2004. But I also have had some great holiday trips to Cape Cod, Egypt, Moscow, Tunisia and riding holidays around Europe. I am going to another house in France next week, my family's holiday house on a lake near Limoges. It will the first real holiday for five years. But I have been so happy here working on the house and garden that I have not really wanted to leave for more than a few days.

11. What would your dream vacation be? (a cruise to some exotic island, a trainride across the country, etc.)

I have always wanted to cross the Andes on horseback. Probably my knees would not stand up to it now, but a girl can dream.

12. Do you believe in ghosts?

No

13. Would you accept $1 000 000 to leave the country and never step foot back in it again?

Depends which country! I would not care if I never went to Britain again, as long as my friends and family could come here, as I feel a foreigner there anyway now and I don't like what the country has become. But as long as I can feed myself and my animals I would never leave my adopted country, France, for any sum of money.

14. Do you prefer being around men or women? (as in are most of your friends male or female, which do you get along with better)

I love being female, though in my dreams I am often male. Most of my closer friieds have been male, and my two best friends are both guys. Both ex-lovers as it happens - I have usually stayed good friends with my exes. Goodness knows what all that says about me!

15. Your house, containing everything you own, catches fire. After saving your loved ones and pets, you have time to safely make a final dash to save any one item. What would it be?

Difficult question - Maybe my computer for all the photographs on it.

16. Given the choice of anyone in the world (alive or dead), whom would you chose to meet?

The Emperor Napoleon. He has always been a hero of mine.

17. Is there any subject that you do not talk about? (for me, I don't talk politics)

Not really. I do shut up pretty quickly though, if I find I am talking to an extremist of any sort, whether in religion, politics or anything else. People like that are a waste of good conversation.

18. Are you excited about anything right now?

Looking forward to a break next week. But I would not say excited as I know what it will be like. And I shall probably miss the animals dreadfully after three days.

19. What would you like to be doing 5yrs from now? What do you think you will be doing 5yrs from now?

Being here, with a finished house and fully landscaped garden, having more time for my voluntary work than I do now. And that is realisable.

20. Would you be willing to eat a bowl full of crickets for $40K ? How about 5K?

I honestly don't know. If they were cooked, probably. They are just like prawns. But I could not eat them live.__________________

ANd now for Gail

So how is the garden renovation going??

It is coming along, though sometimes I despair. I keep telling myself that it looks much better this year than last, so I don't get too depressed. But I have spent so much time the last month on field management, killing docks and nettles in the pasture, that the garden has taken a back seat. Though I have got my veg plot up and running this year, and am freezing lots of surplus produce. I will post pix soon, I promise.

How about an update on the horses!

Yes, I feel bad about that. They are doing well, Tiffin is an escape artist and I have had to spend a fortune in time and money on fences to keep him in. If he doesn't jump over, he digs under!

Any travel plans??

Staying in France for the summer, though next week I am going a bit further south to my family's holiday house on a beautiful lake. I am taking my friend and her children, as they need a break from a difficult divorce situation.

Places to visit in your area if one comes to visit?

Masses to see and do - the Normandy landing beaches and the Norman castles for history, medieval towns like Bayeux (plus the tapestry of course) and Rouen (where they burnt Joan of Arc) and archeological sites going back to Roman times. Plenty of good museums and art galleries. The pretty little fishing villages like Deauville and Trouville, now fashionable resorts. And most of all, the beautiful scenery of rivers and hills and rolling farmland and forests. And if you want to be sophisticated, Paris is only 2 hours away.
Favorite foods and wines of your home region?

This is not a wine area, but specialises in apple products. So we have the best apple cider in the world, as well as apple brandy called Calvados and another lighter liqueur called Pommeau. All of them are much used in cooking. Normandy is a great dairy region, so many famous French cheeses like camembert and Pont L'Eveque come from here, and cooking contains loads of cream. Pork is also very good here, and available right from the farms. ANd there is shellfish of every sort. My favourites are mussels in a Camembert sauce and a classic Normandy apple tart to follow.

Hi, I don't know how I missed these;

I would like to know, what was your first pet. What will you always remember about them and do you have pictures?

The first animals I had were two guinea pigs, Honey and SNowflake, when I was nine. Snowflake, an albino, didn't livew long, but Honey lived in the kitchen and slept on a blanket under the range. I remember one winter a rat came to live in the cellar and the first my parents knew about it was a terrible noise one night and they found the rat and Honey fighting. From what my mother said, the guineapig seemed to be getting the better of his opponent. Anyway, the rat was disposed of, and Honey continued his ownership of the kitchen for four years.I do have a pic of me holding both of them, a 35ml slide.

Also, tell us about your first cat.

I bought a kitten at the school jumble sale when I was eleven, without telling my parents. She was a tabby who strangely never had a name but just became Cat. I tried to call her UNO as it was UN day but it never stuck. She lived with us for 16 years, and we lost her to kidney failure. After I left home and came back at times with other cats, she tolerated them all. She was a good cat.

Hi Linda!

1. When are we going to get an update on Maisey and foals (well they're not exactly foals anymore)?

I have answered it above, but as I said, I am sorry not to have posted more. They are well and very popular with visitors.

2. Have you had any paying customers for your cottage?

Yes, bookings are going well this year. I had people in for Easter week, then a short gap, but from early June through to mid September I have only one week free. I really enjoy meeting different people form different countries each week. And they all seem to enjoy it. Next week I have a family who were here last summer too, so that is a good recommendation.

3. And, of course, how is one of my favourite kitties, Persil?

Persil is very well. She is asleep on my printer as I write this. She can be a bit difficult and does not seem to like her old buddy, Ellie, any more, but chases her away with hisses and growls and sometimes it develops into a real fight. But she is great friends with Wellington and Biscotte and often cuddles up to one or both of them, with purring and grooming going on. She sleeps on the pillow next to me - that is her place.

Hi Susan!

Are you still not home sick yet?

Not in the least. But you must remember that I have not lived in the UK for many years.

I head count with 3 cats, so is it harder with more?

It is terribly hard. Often I headcount, find one or more missing and it takes me five minutes to work out which one it is, then I go search the favourite hiding place of whichever one I can't find. I think I am going senile sometimes with it.

What British foods can you not get in France?

If you try hard enough you can get almost anything, but sometimes at a distance and at a price. It is funny - everyone has something they miss and other things that don't matter. For me, I do miss British bacon - the French version is nice but not the same, and cheddar cheese. I love French cheeses but to make a sauce you cannot beat cheddar, and I also love it with a crunchy apple. So I keep large stocks of bacon and cheese in the freezer. Other things that are difficult to get are golden syrup, baked beans, shredded wheat, porridge oats and good quality tea bags. I stock up on all those when I visit the UK.

What t.v. programs do you not get in France?

I can get them all by satellite. I have Freesat that gives me all the UK free channels and if I wanted to subscribe I could get everything. But I have more than enough.

Can you make a yorkshire pudding?

I can brag and say, yes, I make a very good Yorkshire pudding. I have taught a number of French friends how to make it. The secret is in not beating the mix too hard at first, waiting 30 minutes for the flour to break down and then adding a little water before the final beating. And I use duck fat if possible to add flavour.

Do you put a christmas tree up

This last Christmas I put a tree up for the first time in over five years. I do like having a tree - at one time I used to put up several in different rooms. I have collected tree ornaments all my life and have thousands from many different countries. I can honestly say that I can decorate a tree from my collection with any colour or theme you could possibly suggest. The cats are of course a problem, but I tie the tree up to the curtain rail and use extra strong twine for the ornaments.

On christmas day do you have a traditional turkey dinner

Usually I do. The French eat more beef or lamb, though more and more they are also eating turkey. I remember my first year in Bosnia, I was determined to have a turkey dinner for friends but had a terrible time finding one, then settled for ordering a goose. That fell through, and I was going crazy as I had promised my guests (mostly serving soldiers) a real Christmas. I put out the word of my dilemma everywhere I could think of, and two days before Christmas I ended up with THREE turkeys - one from Croatia, one from Serbia and one from Slovenia! There was another Balkan war in my fridge!

I think I make a pretty good one, too, but I'm always interested in improvement -- I shall definitely give that a go next time.

You certainly must have!! Was there room for anything else?

OK, Jenny, here are a few for you. The theme is (mostly) desert island, i.e. suppose you were stranded on one... and don't worry about the technology to support your choices, that will be taken care of...

1. What would be your five Desert Island CDs? They don't need to come from your own collection. Why would you choose these particular ones?

2. You might also want some reading material. What would be your five Desert Island books? Why?

3. What else would you like to have with you to occupy your time and your mind?

4. You'll also need food. If you could have only two or three foods and nothing else, what would you choose? Why?

5. If you could have one human companion, who would that be? Why?

This one is not part of the theme:

6. If you came into a large sum of money -- an unexpected inheritance, a winning, whatever, but "set-you-up-for-life" big -- what would be the first four things you would do?

Fran, these are difficult ones. But I will try.

1. What would be your five Desert Island CDs? They don't need to come from your own collection. Why would you choose these particular ones?

a) My favourite mood music is North American Native music - I was introduced to it during a trip to Canada, and I have some Iroquois songs which are very relaxing. So before going I might buy a new CD of similar pieces.
b) Dido and Aeneas - I really cannot listen to it enough, and Dido's Lament ('Remember Me') would probably fit my mood exactly.
c) A CD of early Beatles songs - the music of my teenage years so I could relive my youth.
d) Ditto Rolling Stones
e) Wagner's Ring Cycle - though that might mean more than one CD. THe most complex music but with amazing power and themes, and if played loud enough might just attract someone to realise I was there!
2.

You might also want some reading material. What would be your five Desert Island books? Why?

a) Tolkien's Lord of the Rings - I have the three in one volume. A book I have read many times but never tire of and it just takes you so completely into another world.
b) Am I allowed Shakespeare? Again, something you never get tired of. And I could learn some by heart, which would use up time.
c) Collected TS Eliot. My favourite poet, who is constantly providing me with new ideas and things to think about. Including his cats!
d) I have a collected works of Leonardo da Vinci and I would take that as it might give me lots of ideas for improving my way of life with building things, as well as just plain awe at his drawing and painting skill.
e) One of the many Survival Skills books on the market - that would be a necessity, I think.

3. What else would you like to have with you to occupy your time and your mind?

A cat

4. You'll also need food. If you could have only two or three foods and nothing else, what would you choose? Why?

Cheddar cheese - it is so versatile and has such a strong taste
Potatoes -again, versatile and nourishing.
Tomatoes - with these three I would have essential nutrients and could make a great variety of dishes to stave off boredom. And I llike them all, individually or combined.

5. If you could have one human companion, who would that be? Why?

Difficult - I would probably get bored with any one person constantly there. It would have to be someone who was very self-sufficient and did not rely on me for company, who could occupy one part of the island while I had another and we could meet sometimes and exchange ideas and conversation and food (and anything else that occurred to us!). But who? Right now, I honestly don't know. (Now you all know why I have been divorced twice and now live alone!)

This one is not part of the theme:

6. If you came into a large sum of money -- an unexpected inheritance, a winning, whatever, but "set-you-up-for-life" big -- what would be the first four things you would do?

a) Set up a cat refuge to my own design and specification, with large runs and loads of toys and the best possible food and care.
b) Donate a large number of books to the university I used to teach at in Bosnia.
c) Go to South America - I have always wanted to visit Chile and Peru and to cross the Andes, ideally on horseback, but maybe I would have to do it some other way.
d) Finish my house and extend it.

I don't have an MP3 - I only listen to CDs or the radio. But to make your own collage is a good idea - I used to make tapes for the car.

10.- Do you play some Musical instrument?…

Sadly no - I have always wished I could, but I cannot sing or play. I made sure my daughter could, and she plays the flute and bass recorder in an Early Music Group.

Morning...

Canada
If you could visit 3 places in Canada, where would you visit?

Do you ever use the word "eh"... Welcome to Canada eh.

What animals do you associate with Canada? (ex.I think of coyotes in the US...)

Have you ever been to Canada? Where?

Have you ever heard of any famous Canadians?

Good Evening Chris (It's 9PM here)

Your Canadian questions:

If you could visit 3 places in Canada, where would you visit?

Apart from the places I have been, I would like to go to Prince Edward Island, the scene of the Anne of Green Gables books, which I loved as a child. I would also like to go right up North to visit some of hte native peoples who live a tough life up there.

Do you ever use the word "eh"... Welcome to Canada eh.

I don't think so

What animals do you associate with Canada? (ex.I think of coyotes in the US...)

Salmon, moose, beavers, whales

Have you ever been to Canada? Where?

Several times - the first was only to the Canadian side of Niagara. But I have been to Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary, and was a speaker once at the Banff TV festival.

Have you ever heard of any famous Canadians?

A number. The ones I admire particularly are Pierre Trudeau ( not everyone's choice, I know), Margaret Atwood the writer, and the Cirque du Soleil, which I have seen three times in various places.

Wonderful answers, Jenny. I was looking forward to them and was not disappointed. Ready for another set?

We've touched a little on food, so there may be some overlap, and I think I know some of these answers, but let's go for it anyway...

1. Do you cook? Do you like to, or is it a chore?

2. Do you like to cook with someone else? How well do you share your kitchen?

3. What is your favourite thing to prepare?

4. What is your favourite dish that someone else prepares for you? Who?

5. Either of those favourites might be a comfort food, or not. What is your favourite comfort food?

6. What is your favourite celebration food?

7. When people come to my table, I always ask first whether there are any allergies/sensitivities/likes/dislikes I should keep in mind. If you came to my home, what would your answer be?

8. Do you consider yourself adventurous where unfamiliar food is concerned?

9. What is your favourite meal of the day?

Fran I LOVE talking about food almost as much as I enjoy cooking it or eating it! So:

1. Do you cook? Do you like to, or is it a chore?

Yes, I cook. My mother is an excellent cook and she taught all of us to cook properly. As a result my brothers often cook for their families. And I mean cook - none of us use instant food or muixes. For a while back in the eighties, when I needed the money, I cooked professionally, catering dinner parties and weekend lunches. Most of it I enjoy, though sometimes it is a chore if I am alone and I have to stop doing something else I enjoy in order to eat. As a result I often skip a meal, which is not good practice. Or I just eat an apple and some cheese.

2. Do you like to cook with someone else? How well do you share your kitchen?

I like to cook with someone else only if they know what they are doing, and one of us is definitely in charge. I don't mind who, as long as there is a structure to the preparation. Otherwise, everything usually goes wrong - the timing, the proportions and it does not end up as the result expected by the chef. I share my kitchen only on those terms - happy for someone else to cook in it as long as they are in charge and tell me exactly what they want, down to the size of chopping the vegetables or salad.

3. What is your favourite thing to prepare?

Difficult - I think I am known for two things especially, sauces and cakes. But I probably like most to plan a whole meal so it is perfectly balanced and choose the wines to go with it. Perhaps my favourite dish to prepare is duck, with either an orange or a cherry sauce.

4. What is your favourite dish that someone else prepares for you? Who?

I have a friend in London who is a good cook, and he is brilliant with fish. It comes out perfectly textured every time. Especially whole fish - so I love a whole salmon or bream cooked by him. I have to say, the price of fish these days, he doesn't do it very often!

5. Either of those favourites might be a comfort food, or not. What is your favourite comfort food?

My favourite comfort food is cauliflower cheese, made with cheddar cheese and wholegrain mustard.

6. What is your favourite celebration food?

Probably the aforementioned duck, though if it is to be a large party I might do a whole boned and stuffed leg of lamb.

7. When people come to my table, I always ask first whether there are any allergies/sensitivities/likes/dislikes I should keep in mind. If you came to my home, what would your answer be?

Fortunately I have no allergies/sensitivities to food. There are two things I will not eat - tripe and octopus. The tripe goes back to my childhood, when my grandmother's house was filled with the smell of it cooking for my grandfather, who loved it. I have never been able to deal with it since. I used to eat octopus till a holiday in Spain where I was on chef duty one day and the marketers came back with a live octopus in a bucket for me to cook for lunch. I will not go into the details, but I cannot now even look at it on a plate. But I agree with you - I always ask my guests in advance, and I consider it very rude if someone does not inform the hostess in advance. I have had that happen and it has ruined a dinner party.

8. Do you consider yourself adventurous where unfamiliar food is concerned?

Yes, I have had to eat and drink some very strange things around the world, and would always try but might not always choose them again! On the other hand, I have learnt lots of new dishes and ways of cooking by watching others and tasting. One of my favourite things is to taste a new dish and try to guess how it is made.

9. What is your favourite meal of the day?

All of them! Depends where I am and what the schedule is. At home evening dinner is my main meal and I do try to cook properly for that, even when I am alone.
