My parents had two cats when I was born, but they passed way before I was old enough to remember them. I think it was less than a year after I was born. Apparently they used to sleep with me in my crib, though, so I blame them for my life-long love affair with cats.

When I was about 4 or 5 we got sister kittens Pheobe and Chloe. I loved them both and am glad they got to stay together, but Pheobe was MY cat. For the first several years we had her, I would carry her around with me everywhere, usually by her front legs with half of her body just hanging there. If she wasn't with me, I would go find her, catch her, and make her stay with me. She used to go outside in the summer, and if she wasn't home before it was time for bed, I would put on shoes with my pajamas and go out in the field and look for her until I found her.
Many mornings I would wake up to her liking my hand. She was weird in that sense, used to give me kisses more than a dog!
She also spent more time in my 3-story Barbie house than Barbie ever dreamed of. I usually stacked dirty clothes in there, and she would nest. I miss Pheobe so much! Our current kitty, Fefe, is similar to her in a lot of ways, but Pheobe was the first to steal my heart. I moved out and went to college, but when I came to visit I hugged her before I hugged my mom! She lived to be about 15 years before we had to make the hard decision to put her down due to ongoing medical problems.

Unfortunately, all my pictures of her are at my parents' house.

My first cats were Raven
and Nabu. I got them when I was in college. We lost Raven
to cancer, but we still have Nabu. He's 12 yrs old. They were littermates. When I went looking for my first cat, I got a pair.
They were about 1 1/2 yrs old when I adopted them. Raven was a short haired black cat. Nabu is a short haired blue color (grey just doesn't do his coat justice). They are likely Siamese mix cats. Both have/had a Siamese body type and the loud voice.

We had cats while I was growing up, but they were the family's (or more specifically my parents') cats. They were always indoor/outdoor. If they stayed in at night they slept in the basement. No falling asleep with kitties on the bed when I was growing up.

Love this tread.
When i was growing up our family was a dog family mostly. And no animal was aloud to live in the house. But we always had someones dumped kitty around our house. We lived in the country and most of our pets were thrown from a car door on the side of our road. I barely reamber 3 different yellow toms living around our house. The last one i named Thomas he lived for 4 years here before getting killed. The kitty that i loved the most was this feral little tortie named Carmel she had a messed up jaw and she always drooled. My mom tough she was ugly but i tough she was pretty she was around here for about 5 yr then just dissapperd 1 day after she was gone i told mom some day im going to get a kitty the same color. I think she was the one that got my love of kitty's started. So my family finally got our first kitty's i picked out Dora because she looked like carmel then my husband picked out Sunny a yellow tabby.

I'm so glad people are responding to this thread. I love reading about our first kitty loves.

I miss Socks so much. I guess she does look a little bit like a stuffed toy.
Isn't she gorgeous? My mom had a phobia of cats and Socks was the absolute first adult cat she wasn't afraid of. She is so special.

My first cat is Jack. I too grew up in a house where cats were not liked and we had dogs. I talked the "I don't like cats" talk, but walked a different walk. I always loved on the cats I met outside or at other people's homes. I realized that I had no room for a dog in our apartment and had been looking on petfinder at cats and then a few weeks later I had a friend offer me an adorable kitten--Jack. Hubby said okay and the rest is history.

I'm sorry if a) this is in the wrong forum, and/or b) if we've covered this already.

The first cat that was "mine" was Socks. She was a gift when I was 6 years old. She's still alive and lives with someone else now, but I call up to check on her all the time. We were separated when my dad left for Vegas and I moved in with my mom where no pets were allowed. I was only 9 then, I tried but couldn't change the situation.
(I'm talking about her in the past tense because I'm talking about when we were together.)
She was beautiful and sweet, but very independent. She was crazy about food. I remember on Thanksgiving we had a lovely turkey cooling on the counter, forgot about it and left for a quick trip, then came back to find it half eaten with her on the table licking her lips. She loved being scratched so much in her favorite spot by her chin so much she would drool. She also actually enjoyed being picked up and smooched, unlike most cats.
A few years ago her new owner (who is absolutely wonderful and loves Socks very much) and I talked about me taking her back, but decided against it for reasons including the higher predator risks here (she was raised an indoor/outdoor cat [who prefers the outdoors and refuses litter boxes; only relieves herself outside] and would be miserable inside) and she can't stand dogs (I have 2). On top of that, she's an only cat now which is how she likes it best. She never really liked the other cats we had. I want to leave her where she's adjusted now, not pass her around like a used book for my own selfish feelings (missing her terribly).

Here are the only two pictures of Socks I own. They're both crummy scans of crummy scratched photos from a crummy disposable camera, but they're of a very special girl and I treasure them.

She was sooo soft.

Socks getting a very unwelcome bath from my grandma. (Yes, they have an extravagant bar.
)

Tell me about YOUR first cat.
Peedie wasn't my first cat; I was his most recently-acquired human! My folks, cat-lovers from generations of cat-lovers, adopted him from "the street" four years before I came into the world. He was my big brother. We did everything together. He slept on my bed and shared in all my adventures. No other friend will ever be more unconditionally loving or loyal than my gorgeous furbrother, Peedie.

I grew up with 2 cats but when I moved out on my own in 1989 , a friend was looking to place kittens and that is how Koishtobah [koi] came into my life. He was such a joy and had a personality to match. We made a huge move across the country together, survived several bad relationships and finally settled down with my now loving husband and 3 other cats. Koi passed at only 10 yrs due to kidney failure and even 9 yrs later I still cry over him. I know that he is my angel and caring for all the kitties we have lost. My husband and I now have 10 cats inside and 2 dogs. We also foster and bottle feed kittens and cats and currently are fostering a mama cat and her 3 kittens.

Twitch was/is my first house cat / pet. Otherwise, we always had cats on the farm growing up - no one was fixed, they never lived long.

Genetically - Twitch is a fluke. Her dad was her mother's son. They were both inbred, too. She's deaf - her teeth were rotten & removed when she was a few years old. She is now 7 years old, well beyond what we expected her to live due to re-occurring issues.

My mom is a true blue cat lover so we always had cats, but the first cat that was mine was Stoney, yes the 5 year me named her
she was white with gray spots...that looked like stones
our cats were indoor/outdoor when I was little and she would disappear for days at a time and one day she came back after having been hit by a car
My parents rushed her to the vet and my mom said do what you have to, she made it amazingly and lived for at least another 5 years. Shortly after we moved to our new house tho, she lost control of her bodily functions and had to be put to sleep
Years later I found a clock with a picture of a cat on it that looked exactly like Stoney and it's hanging on my wall

My first cat (or probably better stated the first family cat) was a brown tabby called Lady Althea. Lady Althea had an unfortunately bad disposition. I don't know where she came from; possibly my dad's farm friend who kept our American Shetland pony for us. I used to try to dress her. I was about four years old when we got her. One time my mother caught me about to give her a "haircut" (cut her whiskers) UHOH!! She caught me just in time.

Eventually I guess my dad took her back to the farm. Of course I had no control over that!! Our next cat was a big orange tabby tom called "Bubi" (little boy in German). Unfortunately I doubt if there are any pictures at all of these early cats. The first cat that was consciously mine when I was about seven was Boy Kitty (and his sister Girl Kitty, my sister's cat)...such inventive names, eh?
Girl Kitty got killed by a car before our eyes.
I still remember that in detail
Once I grew up and left home and got cats of my own they were not allowed to roam!! I don't know, was it just different back then? I am embarrassed to say that most of my childhood cats "disappeared". That's really sad, isn't it? My parents (now in their 80's) have a Hmmie kitty that they absolutely ADORE and never goes outside. That is one pampered kitty..my DAD carries her around like a baby doll, LOL!!!!! Boy have things changed..........

my 1st cat was a beautiful tortie that i named Medley, for her medley of colors. she had gorgeous gold eyes - i have a pic, somewhere, of her on my bed. i had gold satin sheets, & her eyes matched the sheets perfectly. i got her when i moved to an apartment [my 1st place alone] & i'd never had cats... just dogs. but cats were more practical for an apartment. she was a lovely little kitten when i got her, & she passed from an unknown malady at the age of 15.
