Is it my impression, or cases of abuse with cats are much more common than against dogs? This sickens me!
Sadly, you are right....our puritanical culture has demonized cats for centuries. many people worry about the diseases that can be caught from cats, which only shows their ignorance - dogs are much more immune to diseases that are lethal to cats and humans (such as bubonic plague; giardia; strep). Hence, dogs can eat rotten meat & excrement, which would make cats & humans ill.
There's a smear campaign against cats: "Dogs have masters, cats have slaves": Dogs are loyal; cats are aloof: "Dog is man's best friend" (never mind that dogs kill more humans than cougars, bears & wolves combined!).
How many times have we read headlines "Cat causes house fire!" when it's "suspected" that the cats have knocked over an unattended candle (as if the cats can strike a match & light a candle themselves).
And in "homophobic" areas, cats are often considered to be the pet of choice for only lonely, crazy "cat ladies" and "gay guys".
To me, it boils down to ignorance and fear....
