WASHINGTON -- Spending by lawmakers on taxpayer-financed trips abroad has risen sharply in recent years, a Wall Street Journal analysis of travel records shows, involving everything from war-zone visits to trips to exotic spots such as the Galápagos Islands.

The spending on overseas travel is up almost tenfold since 1995, and has nearly tripled since 2001, according to the Journal analysis of 60,000 travel records. Hundreds of lawmakers traveled overseas in 2008 at a cost of about $13 million. That's a 50% jump since Democrats took control of Congress two years ago.
Nice of them to spend, spend, spend while people are losing jobs at a record rate.

It must be nice I would like to see all these people live in minimum wage for a year. Maybe then they would actually think of a way to help people out.

I would LOVE to go to Galapogos Island to dive....but, why are they going there except for a vacation? I really doubt they were going to negotiate with the turtles and lizards. I could understand going to a war zone or going to talk to other contries to get their side of things, but Galapogos isn't in anything, is it? It's VERY hard to get approval to go there. My ex-boss when I worked at the dive shop in Guam tried for 3 yrs and finally got approval....then it was revoked. All he wanted to do was film the reefs and underwater life.
