We have been trying to stick to healthy treats for them, which usually means some bits of plain chicken breast either poached or grilled (depending how the humans' dish was prepared). They like that, but I picked up a few of the appetizers just to see what they were about, and I was surprised how excited our fussy kitty got over the chicken appetizer. I wish I knew what seasoning they use. The ingredients list doesn't mention any seasonings at all.

Also, I am wondering why this isn't a complete food for them. Been wondering about Before Grains, too. Both types state that they are supplemental, but I don't really understand why. Isn't plain meat exactly what cats are supposed to eat?

I recently switched them to wet (canned), and want to mix that up with regular meats once in a while. They refused raw, but they will eat lightly poached and shredded poultry, and some of their Wellness flavors include liver. Would feeding them half-homemade plain meat and half-canned food be nutritionally incomplete?
Cats require a high-protein diet naturally as they are more carnivorous than canines, HOWEVER, meat alone is not a complete diet. Cats require vitamins and minerals to make their foods 'complete', just like a person's diet. For example, cats sometimes require cranberry (most good foods have this in them) which helps maintain a healthy urinary tract.

The wet food, as long as it has all of the vitamins and minerals listed in the ingredients will make it complete (I'd have to see the label to tell you; I know the Wellness wet foods are complete).

Plain meat and wet food every day doesn't work; if you give your cat plain meat, he'll consume that and eat less of the canned and recieve less of the nutrients from the wet food, therefore you would only occasionally add meat into his daily diet (say once or twice a week). The reason for my saying this is that meat, due to its protein, is filling; you don't want your cat to fill up on meat alone and not consume enough of the wet food, which has all of his daily requirements in it. Keep in mind that on a day you feed wet food and real meat, you'll need to feed less of the wet food to compensate for the presence of the meat, otherwise if your cat is a bottomless pit that will eat non-stop, he'll gain weight.

Hope this helps; if not, feel free to send me a message.

Up to 10% plain meat is fine with an all canned diet... Anything regularly over 10% plain meat discuss proper nutrient / vitamins supplements with your VET

Supplemental on a LABEL of pet food mean s it is designed for a snack or in addition to a complete food ... These can be a based for a semi homemade diet or as a treat food... MANY are as pointed out missing some or all the needed amounts of Micro nutrients as per AFFCO .... AFFCO base is similar to our RDA , should be enough for sustaining life ... Ie supplemental foods are missing at least one nutrient or a % of that is needed to sustain life

The taurine ??? needs to be clarified .. do you want to know what it is or how much is required? ...

Yeah, I meant splitting the meat and canned food half-half every day would not be sufficient due to the lack of vitamins and minerals, but of course you could add a small amount of meat, etc., on top of whatever the cat normally gets everyday (a lot of people do that at my work when their pets are fussy and won't eat foods without some sort of topper on it). You can add any sorts of toppers, e.g. raw or cooked meat, pumpkin, dehydrated fruits/vegetables/meats to make it more interesting, but as you previously stated, the topper wouldn't be more than 10% of the daily diet

I bought these as a treat for my cats yesterday.

Henry gobbled it up, but he eats everything in less than 2 seconds. Chloe liked it, but Mattie just licked the gravy and left the rest sitting there.
I bought them the plain chicken one.

Is it ok to mix the FF with his reg food on a daily basis? I just add a little of the FF to give his reg food more flavor.

I don't know what it is with Fancy Feast. They sure know how to make the kitty crack, don't they?

I'll probably use the coupon, but I doubt that I'll be adding this to the kitty pantry. The only one who seems to like it is Cleo, and she needs to lose weight as it is, lol!

I believe that the reason is because it doesn't have any Taurine (an essential amino acid necessary for cats) in it. A diet deficient in Taurine can lead to blindness and cardiomyopathy in cats.

Here's a great link that explains why cats need Taurine in their diet.

I'm familiar with the need for taurine, but I'm curious. Where does it occur naturally? Can it be found in birds, mice and grass, which is essentially what a feral cat would eat?

Mice and birds both contain taurine. In general, taurine is found in meat, especially poultry.

Yup, with the ones that aren't nutritionally complete, as long as the majority of his food is complete then it would be fine.

I buy the BeforeGrain and Wellness meats, and mix 1/4 with 3/4 regular non-supplemental food.

So then the FF Appetiziers should contain taurine, if they are mostly meat, right? Cooking the meat doesn't remove the taurine, does it?

YES meat contains it both muscle and organs.. organs usually have more ... COOKING and loss are a debatable item... most companies add extra for protection and to be able to list it on the % as an added thing
