Picky cat worrying me

We have a 4-year old cat, and he's not eating his food. He is hungry - he goes to the bowl and just turns his nose up at the stuff in it. If he's really hungry, he'll eat a few bits, but he does it in a way that says "I don't really like this stuff".

When we adopted him from a friend 4 months ago, she sent him home with some Purina Cat Chow Naturals. When he got through that bag, we bought him Friskies Indoor, because the Purina was out of stock at the supermarket. He simply hoovered up the Friskies. Then a co-worker of my wife's said she had changed her cat's food, did we want 5 huge bags of dry food? Being on a tight budget, we said yes. At fist he hoovered that up as well, but over the last week he's just not eating it. We got another bag of Friskies, which he eats 2 or 3 bits of before he wanders off dejectedly.

He does have some cat treats, that we have to use to lure him indoors at night. He will positively jump on those, even if the bits fall all over the place when he's trying to crunch them up. We certainly don't give him these treats all the time, but do you think these are taking his appetite away from the everyday food?

Is it some other factor? Do cats, like us, lose their appetite, and weight, in the hot summer months? It is summer, and the weather is hot (90+ every day). He seems to be acting normally, maybe sleeps longer in the daytime, and is perhaps a little more irritable than he used to be. He's certainly lost some weight.

We'd like to be able to try different foods for him, try and find something he'll actually eat, but, as I said, being on a budget we really have to get through a bag before we can try something new (and it's so annoying the smallest bags are so big!)

Any suggestions? I am worrying myself sick, as we had to have a cat put to sleep last year because he stopped eating (but that was for other reasons). Do you think I'm worrying too much?

Any advice would be VERY much appreciated!

He probably ate quickly then stopped because of the low nutrients of Friskies. It is full of fillers like corn gluten and soy, which have no nutrtional value to cats. Think of it. You might eat donuts and soda every day for awhile and love it, but eventually you might feel sick and crummy because your body can't produce proper nutrients. Also, cats also fast to rid their bodies of chemicals-something abundant in low-grade cat food. If you are on a budget, I suggest Chicken Soup and Felidae. They're pretty "up-there" with plenty of real meat and beneficial veggies.
Also, buying in bulk always helps. Remember, that if you buy too much in advance, the nutritional value tends to fade. Canned food is very important for cat health-I suggest a can of Fancy Feast a day, but check for a brand with no wheat gluten or fish. Without canned food, your cat may develop urinary problems.
If your cat refuses wet food, buy Taste of the Wild (an pretty affordable grain-free cat food) and if it is not out of your budget invest in a water fountain to increase water intake, which is low in dry food. Cats are desert animals and often don't consume enough water.
A raw meat based diet can be very affordable if you make friends with your butcher and watch for sales. It's also closet to a cat's natural diet. However, sometimes it can be dangerously imbalanced so I can't stress enough providing proper nutrients.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the advice. I'll certainly look into it. do you think I ought to worry about him losing weight? He's not scrawny but he weighs less than when we got him.

If you switched foods suddenly, that might be your problem. I'd get a small bag of the old food and feed him that for about a week or so. Then, start gradually (as in very gradually) mixing in the new food. I usually do a 1:4 ratio, 1 part new food to 4 parts old food for about a week, then go to a 2:4, for a week, then 3:4 until we're using only the new food.

Generally, kitties don't like to have their food switched suddenly. Get it tonight if you can as it's imperative that he eat something. If you can't get to the store, try boiling a chicken breast in some plain water, shredding it and adding in some of the broth to make it the consistency of chicken salad. It's not good for kitties to go without food as it can cause liver damage.

As long as your cat is not underweight, I wouldn't worry. Purina Naturals is a slightly higher quality food than Friskies, so his body may be "confused" (don't know a better term). Also, a stressful situation (like a new home) can cause weight loss. But to be on the safe side, I'd check in with a vet.

Well, he was a bit sluggish last night. But this morning, I tried a stop-gap solution that seems to have worked wonders. I was making a tuna sandwich to take to work for lunch, and put the brine onto his dry food. Yes, I know it's full of salt and other nasty stuff, but when I came back later the cat had eaten virtually all the food. He appeared just now, coat lovely and soft, and he's perked up tremendously.

I'll still have to try your suggestions for a more long-term and healthy option, but I'm just relieved that he's had a good couple of meals and is looking happier!

Sometimes cats' appetites do change a bit in hot or humid weather and I think you said yours goes outside? He may be eating on the side out there as well.

A little tuna juice can work wonders - a friend has luck wetting dry food down with water (but then you can't just leave it out - you have to treat it as wet food - myself, I leave wet food out only 30 minutes; other people will leave it down longer).

Also, he may just not like the food your co-worker gave you. I know it seems a shame with the cost of food, but better to give that food to a shelter and hope they have luck with it, than have your cat continue to refuse it (if that's what happens). Try some of the great suggestions you've already gotten, but maybe be prepared to switch slowly back to the food he originally liked. Authority from Petsmart seems pretty good, and is pretty reasonably priced, if you're near a store. Also, Petsmart is good at refunds, if kitty just doesn't like something!

I had the same concerns when I tried to switch my little Plucky (little? 13 pounds of muscle!) fromRoyal Canins to Innova EVO. In fact, over the course of a year I tried to switch him to 7 or 8 different types of dry/canned food, and he would have none of it. And yes, a few times in there he did lose weight as I tried for one or two days to "outwait" him and see if he would eat the new stuff.

He would not.

I finally got him to switch to a new food by following the advice of others on these forums and adding just a tiny bit of the new stuff- 5 or 6 small pieces of kibble (I counted!) -to his usual. Over the course of a month, that went up to 12..then 18..then almost half and half...and finally I have him eating nothing but the high quality food.

I would advise the same to you. Get him what he likes, and if you want him to go to something else..mix it in very very gradually. With time, hopefully, he will switch over..and won't drop too much weight in the meantime. Good luck!

When Cindy came to live us, she was refusing the food I was offering her. I was frantic and was buying everything out there to get her to eat. Finally one day I popped open a can of something (Iams fish I think) and she just flew over to the bowl and start gobbling. I don't feed her Iams anymore, I've gotten her onto better food, but she's still a picky little thing. Even if she's obviously hungry, if the food I put in front of her doesn't suit her fancy (even if she's eated it the day before) she will just walk away. I'm such a softie I will pop open another can, and can almost always count on her eating Fancy Feast (not my favorite thing to give her).

One of my cats, had the same type of reaction to food....she would stand by the bowl, I would add food, and she would sniff it, pick at it and walk away, like nope, not that. So after 4 days I took her to the vet, and she had a rotten molar that was causing her pain to eat.

We will be getting a retired queen in a few days and I know for a fact she will need to put on weight and I have a plan. One thing I have done in the past is pour one of those "pouches" food into either a lil dry food or regular "pate" style canned food (had a Persian once on the skinny side). Some cats prefer the different textures from the pouch food vs the pate style.
I second on Chicken Soup as an affordable solution when on a budget without compromising too much quality(the 6lbs bag is under $9.00 here), and the 5.5oz can $0.81 at a local pet store. Not too bad.

Gannett,I seem to be having a similar problem with my 13 wk old. God,she can`t afford to drop any weight! Mine does kind of the same...won`t eat heartily but acts whiney and hungry.I feed a combo of dry Purina Naturals and usually wet Friskees Meaty Bits.

I`m going to try some of the recommended brands from this thread.

If you're truly desperate, get a smelly wet food. Try some of the Friskies things. They're not too bad, and it might get her back to eating.

I'm sure you're going for kitten food. Be sure you are, because it has more fat (and protein) in it. Fat smells good to cats, just as it does to us. That's how I got Punkin to start eating when we adopted him. We were getting pretty worried by the time he started eating well!
