COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The governor of South Carolina, who caused a ruckus after he could not be located by staff, family and friends for days, said Wednesday he has been having an affair..............
Ah, I was wondering when this story would turn up here.

It's a very strange story. My first thought is that John Ensign is cheering from the rooftops because it gets his affair off the front pages. I don't think he's telling the truth because his story makes no sense to me. He went to Argentina for seven days just to break off an affair? And, as he tells the story, his wife already knew about the affair, so why not make some excuse to vacation in Argentina rather than doing the cloak and dagger stuff?

Actually, this brings up an interesting question. Presumably, the guy hopped on a plane somewhere in the US (Atlanta?), showed his ID, and the airline scanned his passport. In Argentina, he would have had his passport scanned again when he entered the country. How is it that we didn't know that? Shouldn't the Department of Homeland Security been able to check to see if he got on an airplane when he went missing?

Isn't that "flame baiting" to say

The way I see it, that statement is just pure flame baiting.

But nice to see you posting Pookieboy. LOL

Yep, the Pubs have taken two bad hits in one week. Ensign and now, this dude.

They can both kiss it good-bye. Their career and marriages both I would assume.

I was kinda hoping this guy really was in the Appalachians hiking around and stress-relieving. Instead, he was stress-relieving in a different way

I am going to watch Hannity to see if he mentions this. Ten bucks says he won't.

What a great role model for all of his constituents.

I considered Bill Clinton's sex life to be between him and his wife and I feel the same way about Ensign and Sanford. I know there are some good politicians out there but these stories of infidelity always seem to get the brightest spotlight and will eclipse any good you have done. There is plenty of stupidity of the moral sort in both parties. So these stories, unfortunately, cease to amaze me. The only thing I have a quibble with is both Ensign and Stanford citing moral decline when talking about Bill Clinton's impeachment. That is why I try not to cast stones because my house has some glass windows that can break. The biggest problem I have with these stories is not the moral character of the individuals involved, that is between them and thier family and God, but the stupidity. Did you think you can continue and not be found out. And in the case of Stanford, you traveled to Argentina for goodness sakes. You think no-one would notice. And really, Argentina.

It never ceases to amaze me how some men will just throw their careers away for a moment's pleasure.

The hypocrisy is the biggest factor for me. He and Ensign are finished in politics.

I think it's just human nature. I think politicians are particularly susceptible because of the particular natures of their jobs and the stresses they put on marriages. In large part when a politician comes out and says he had an affair now, people are just sort of ho-hum about it, much like they are about 'revelations' that a politician once smoked pot. It's much more about how they got caught and who they got caught with now.

In this case, the who isn't a big deal, but the how is pretty disastrous. He essentially abandoned his state for a week to go hook up with his lover and he lied about it. If he were a soldier, there would be court martial proceedings underway right now. I don't think the voters will forgive him for that and I don't blame them because to me it screams out the fact that he will put his own personal needs above those of his state.

Hypocrisy plays a key role as well. If one of your political opponents is caught having an affair and you make political hay out of it, expect to be crucified if you're caught doing the same thing.

Lol what gets me is...he comes on TV all dramatic acting like a teenager in high school. And wants to keep his job. And I think I heard on Fox news that he shouldn't resign. OMG!!! If I didn't go to work for 5 days I know I would be fired. The fact that he's a state governor doesn't make it okay, it actually makes it worse. What are these people thinking...

Oops just saw another thread about it that I didn't see when i posted this yesterday. Sorry! Mods can work their magic and take care of this right?

Its ridiculous. He needs to resign because he was gone for 5 days, if I disappeared from any job for 5 days I know I'd be fired.
This is, especially, embarrassing for the GOP as they have been singing this dude's praises from the roof tops because of him trying to refuse the Stimulus money and taking it to the SCOTUS.

This guy let a lot of people down. He's yesterday's news now. He will be lucky if he ever works again.

Wow, I didn't realize, what State are you Governor of?

What a sleazy slimeball. I guess he deserves whatever he gets.

Ladies, just so you know, there are good guys out there! I hear the stories guys tell about women coming on to them all the time, etc., and I just have to say, I must not be frequenting the right places, or something. It's never happened to me. I think we give out signals, unconsciously, that we're looking, and that starts the ball rolling.

His wife has made a brave statement:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_sc_gov...fe_s_statement
I send her prayers and vibes for strength, comfort & healing - the fact that she is willing to forgive his betrayal is such a beautiful act of faith - clearly she has turned to her Lord, who Himself, knows what betrayal feels like, who was crucified because of it.
I truly doubt the South Carolinians will be so forgiving....

What makes you think they didn't know...

I think he's a hypocritical idiot. Like you wouldn't get caught. What on earth possessed him to go to Argentina on a whim for 5 days?! surely she wasn't THAT good in bed? You just can't do that when you're in that sort of position. What if there had have been some sort of state emergency?

And what is it with all these political figures who try to be so self-righteous having such torrid affairs? Makes you wonder how many haven't been caught yet.

It's funny, but after seeing him on TV last night confessing to his sins I truly felt sorry for the guy. I think he could very well carry out the rest of his term without resigning, especially with his wife being willing to stand by her man. I mean, Bill and Hillary Clinton did it that way! Any national ambitions are out of the question tho [remember when Gary Hart was a possible contender?]

I watched Keith Olbermann last night and he was reading those e-mails like it was out of a Harlequin romance novel and there was slocky music playing in the backround and it actually made me lol, It was also just soooo embarassing to hear. Can you imagine how it makes his 17 yr. old son feel? Gads.

How DID that newspaper get a hold of those e-mails anyway???

WOW, what an awesome, awesome statement by a very good woman.

It is a sad thing to say but the tragic news about Michael Jackson will take a lot of heat off that family, at least for a little while.

catsknowme, thank you for posting that link. We should all strive to be as good a person as that woman.

"I remain willing to forgive Mark completely for his indiscretions and to welcome him back, in time, if he continues to work toward reconciliation with a true spirit of humility and repentance."

And I think in woman speak, that means, he better come crawling to me on his belly! (Or I would like to think it means that!)

To me, this problem is two-fold. First the messing around on his wife. That in itself can be over come with time (and a public with short memories) as we have seen in the past. But the other part of this, and this is the bigger hit in regards to his political career, was his disappearing without even his staff knowing where he was. What if there had been an emergency? Basically he abandoned his post. I don't think there are words for the level of stupidity of that move.

Lol ..i was trying to say that any job would fire their employee if they didnt' show up for 5 days and being governor IS a job. Being governor doesn't make you exempt of rules.

I think the wife is a very smart woman of great principles.

Seems that when you're clamoring for some semblance of respectability, step one of the process shouldn't be likening yourself to King David, in any capacity. Really, Mark, that's your parallel?

There's really no end to political hubris; even after you get caught.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford got back to work Friday, but first he had some more apologizing to do.

In his first public event since he revealed his mistress in Argentina, the Republican governor met with state agency heads in what is usually a low-key Cabinet meeting. He specifically apologized to the agency leaders that handle economic development trips and his security, and likened his struggle to that of King David.

The governor, who talked about "moral absolutes" and God's law during his revealing, yet rambling news conference Wednesday, said King David "fell mightily, fell in very, very significant ways, but then picked up the pieces and built from there."

Well, supposedly David did have an affair with another man's wife and he was an executive just like Sanford, so I'm not sure it's that bad of a parallel. He could have brought it up just to illustrate that even a man who was Yahweh's chosen one had flaws. Hopefully, the governor didn't have Maria's husband killed like David did with Bathsheba's husband.

Granted. But usually when people try to execute transference like that, they want you to think they identify in the whole; "He screwed up, I screwed up; he was a great leader, I am a great leader"; that sort of thing. See, he even got you to think his "crime" was insignificant, by comparison. J/k.

No doubt there are prime examples out there of great men that have fallen. But propaganda tricks aren't going to endear him to anyone. They just make him look ridiculous.

Just a pet peeve of mine. More political chicanery in lieu of contrition.

To me, his inference is that he considers himself chosen, just as King David was

I think it is up to the constituents in his state to decide if he should remain or resign.

Actually I wish she had not said anything it just makes it all the more sordid. So she knew about the affair in January, she had to turn down repeated request from her husband to visit his mistress in Argentina. What sort of idiot asks his wife permission to visit his mistress. He obviously wasn't making a very good attempt at the counseling and reconciliation. She must have known that this is not a matter of a fly by night affair. Her husband and this lady had been professing some pretty serious love talk. Personally I am not sure what they were working on. She says they separated two weeks ago because he said he wanted to work on a book and clear his head. What kind of excuse is that? Work on a book while trying to clear his head of another women he professes love for? She says she forgives the adultry but could not condone it. Then why did he keep asking her? Because she holds the purse strings?

I am glad she has her faith to get her through this but did we need all the sordid details. There is alot to be said for the time honored response of requesting privacy in difficult times.
